Thanks to all who came out and helped make Monday's events at historic Callands successes! Now please join us on Saturday, August 1 at 10 a.m. at 401 North Main Street in Chatham for the unveiling of a historic marker commemorating Gilbert's Restaurant. The event is free and open to the public.

By July 20, 1776, the revolutionary Council of Virginia in Williamsburg had received a copy of the Declaration of Independence. The Council ordered that the Declaration be published in the Virginia Gazette and that "the sheriff of each county in this Commonwealth proclaim the same at the door of his courthouse the first court day after he shall have received the same."

Join us on Monday, July 27 at 5:30 p.m. at the site of the original Pittsylvania County courthouse in Callands (597 Sago Road) as we commemorate and 250th anniversary of this momentous event with a reenactment of the first public proclamation of the Declaration of Independence in Pittsylvania County. This event is free and open to the public. No ticket is required. For those who plan to attend the Tomato Festival and picnic it will follow immediately afterwards. Note however that you do not have to have a Tomato Festival ticket to attend the Declaration of Independence event.

Please make plans to join us on Monday, July 27 at 5:30 as we commemorate the 250th anniversary of the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in Pittsylvania County! We will reenact this monumental historic event at the old Callands courthouse site (597 Sago Road). This event is free and open to the public. No ticket is required. For those who plan to attend the Tomato Festival and picnic it will follow immediately afterwards. Note however that you do not have to have a Tomato Festival ticket to attend the Declaration of Independence event.

We'll hold tickets for you and you can pay at the event. This is a great opportunity to enjoy a fun event at a beautiful historic location, featuring a meal of dishes made from locally grown tomatoes.

We're making it easy to get your tickets for this year's Tomato Festival. As usual they are available from any Board member. But you can also reserve tickets by simply emailing us at [email protected]. Tell us how many tickets you want, we'll hold them for you, and you can pay for them at the event. To reserve tickets this way, please email your request by July 20.
