This coming Monday August 25 at 7 pm PHS is sponsoring a to***co program at the Agricultural Center outside of Chatham. The program will feature Leon and Nancy Compton. Leon has a had a wide range of experiences and a wealth of knowledge about to***co's history in the county as well as its processing. Nancy will display her paintings which have been very popular prints that show the growing, harvesting and sales of to***co. The To***co Exhibit at the Center will be a valuable tour for those who wish to see implements and other paraphernalia associated with to***co's history, which has paralleled the history of Pittsylvania County. Admission is free.

Located on the first exit to Gretna. From 2-4 p.m. A debate between a Tory and a Patriot about the topic of Independence of the Colonies. Plus music, period dress from some attendees, refreshments (watermelon and apple cider), tours of the tavern, children's games, and a militia encampment. Come join us. Its free.

Besides the 1813 Clerks Office open from 10-2, except for the opening ceremonies at 12 at the Courthouse, and the History center being open from 10-2, omorrow June 17 books offered by the Pittsylvania Historical Society will be available at the Ennis (Annex) building across from the History Center (Restored Railroad Station at 340 Whitehead Street.

“Finding Our Roots” Local History and Genealogy Event to Uncover Hidden Histories this May

Chatham, VA—History United, a program of Virginia Foundation for the Humanities (VFH), announces a community history and genealogy event, Finding Our Roots, which will be held on Saturday, May 6,2017 from 12 PM - 4 PM. This year’s event will take place at Reid Street Gallery in Chatham, Virginia, the Pittsylvania County seat, in honor of that county’s 250th anniversary.

Now in its third year, Finding Our Roots will offer activities to encourage community engagement in the lesser-known, but important, stories of family and local history. The event will feature one-on-one consultations with professional and local genealogists and librarians, a keynote at 3 PM by historian Lynn Rainville, author of Hidden Hidden History: African American Cemeteries in Central Virginia and will conclude with a free Ancestry.com DNA kit giveaway.

About Speaker Lynn Rainville:
Lynn Rainville is a research professor in the humanities and the founding director of the Tusculum Institute for local history and historic preservation, located at Sweet Briar College. Although her PhD is in Near Eastern archaeology, she has spent the last two decades studying historic American cemeteries, segregated schools, and enslaved communities. She is the author of several books, including Hidden History: African American Cemeteries in Central Virginia (University of Virginia Press), a book about Sweet Briar College (Arcadia Press), and her forthcoming book title Doing Their Bit:Virginians in the Great War due out later this year with McFarland Press. Her next book, Invisible Founders: Two Centuries of African American Labor at Sweet Briar, is due out in 2018 (Berghan Press).

Avoca Museum invites you to a fun, family-friendly, and fee-free opening day celebration! /the event will include wine and cheese, historical demonstrations, new exhibits, and special exhibitions. Stay after for a special presentation delivered by local historian Dr. Larry Aaron on the topic of Revolutionary War-era gunpowder production in the Altavista/Hurt area. It’s just Avoca Museum’s way of saying “thank you” to our community for its support.

March 4 Tour of Northside High School Museum representing the African American community. Emphasis on black education in early 1900s and especially Rosenwald Schools. See Wednesday March 2 Star Tribune for details and route. Time 1-4 p.m. Sponsored by Pittsylvania Historical Society and Corner Baptist Church.

Turn on Spring Garden Road (Rt. 640) off Rt 58 north if coming from Danville area. Travel about 17 miles then right on Corner Road. Corner Baptist Church is on the left. From Chatham follow %& East to its junction with Rt. 640. From Gretna area take Rt. 40 east then turn right on 640 at Mt. Airy. Follow directions to church as indicated above.
