The exhibition may be closing, but David McGee’s work is staying at the Bechtler. ❤️

We are proud to announce the acquisition of “Drum Call” (2025), one of the standout works from “David McGee: The Griot and the Nightingale,” for the museum’s permanent collection.

Part of McGee’s “Shadow Men” series, the watercolor depicts a Black Civil War soldier standing beside a tall drum—a powerful symbol of warning, communication, and agency. Created to mark the 160th anniversary of Juneteenth, the work reflects on the enduring legacy of emancipation and the ongoing pursuit of freedom.
Made possible through the generosity of individual donors, “Drum Call” is only the second artwork purchased by the Bechtler since opening in 2010. Its acquisition ensures that McGee’s defining artistic voice will remain part of the Bechtler’s story for years to come.

See “Drum Call” in “David McGee: The Griot and the Nightingale” before the exhibition closes Sunday, August 23.

The beat says it. Our security team enforces it. You can’t touch this. 🎶🙅‍♀️

Get close enough to be inspired, but give the artwork plenty of space. A little distance helps protect the collection for everyone who visits after you.

A huge thank-you to the guests and staff who played along, featuring our amazing Security Supervisor Claude Harding and Visitor Services team members Kenya K. Templeton and Carl Stephens! 🌟

No artworks were touched in the making of this Reel.

What if a prescription led you to a museum instead of a pharmacy? 🎨❤️

Loneliness and social isolation affect millions of people, including many right here in Charlotte. Charlotte Art on Prescription is helping address this growing challenge through museum visits, live performances, art-making and shared experiences that create opportunities for connection and belonging.

PBS NewsHour recently visited the Bechtler to explore the program and meet the people at the heart of it. The story includes participant Alisha Bigby, who shares how art helped her reconnect with the world around her after experiencing profound loss.

This is what art can do. It can start a conversation, bring people together and remind us that we are not alone.
