Beneath California’s golden grasses, along quiet trails, and even in our own backyards, some of the state’s most spectacular wildlife is quietly moving through the landscape. But how well do we really know our snakes?

Join us on September 26 for Golden-State Snakes: An Introduction to Some of California’s Most Spectacular Serpents at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center! 🌿🐍

Discover which snakes call California home, learn how to tell venomous species from non-venomous ones, uncover the truth behind common snake myths, and find out how to safely coexist with these fascinating animals.
With conservation biologist and Save The Snakes founder Michael G. Starkey, this fun, interactive, and family-friendly presentation will answer your questions and give you a whole new appreciation for the serpents in our wild spaces — and sometimes, our own backyards.

Come Join Oak Hollow Photography's Erik Johnson and Effie Yeaw Nature Center staff to witness the stunning rise of the Harvest Moon. Let us share this wonderful experience with you. The event will begin in our Assembly Building for a short 15-minute presentation about The Fall Rut of Black-tailed deer on the American River. Following the presentation will be a hike through our Nature Study Area in search of beautiful bucks at sunset. At 6:49pm, the Harvest Moon will rise from the east over the American River Parkway. After the walk, we will return to the Assembly Building for refreshments. We will enjoy watching fresh autumn flavored infusion tea or gourmet apple cider. Taste hand crafted autumn themed, pastries, and desserts by a local Baker. Connect with the natural world with fellow nature lovers while discovering the beauty of the Nature Study Area at dusk. Don’t miss this one time event. Signups are limited. This walk will be a 1 1/2 to 2 miles round trip from the nature center to the rivers edge and back to the nature center. The trail conditions can be rough over uneven terrain, rocks in the trail and slight inclines to the rivers edge.

What Awaits You
Settle in for a 30-minute presentation that shines a spotlight on the night dwellers of Effie Yeaw — bats swooping through the dark, curious bugs, clever spiders, slithering snakes, and even scorpions. You'll learn what makes each creature so special and why these often-feared animals are true heroes of our ecosystem.

Meet Our Ambassadors Up Close
Get ready for a highlight of the evening! A naturalist will lead a live demonstration featuring some of our own creepy crawlies! Watch, learn, and see these amazing creatures like never before — a rare chance to appreciate their beauty from just a few feet away.

Into the Night We Go
Once the presentation wraps, we'll step outside together under the glow of the Halloween moon. Armed with new knowledge and a sense of wonder, we'll wander the Nature Study Area in search of the very creatures you just discovered. Who will spot the first bat? Can you find a spider's web glistening in the moonlight? Every rustle and shadow becomes part of the adventure.

We will wrap up the night with a refreshing spooky beverage or treat.

Who Should Come
This event is perfect for nature lovers, curious explorers, and families searching for a Halloween experience unlike any other. Bring your sense of curiosity, your comfortable walking shoes, and your excitement for the wild side of the season. Recommended for ages 6 and up!

What can the plants and animals of the American River Parkway teach us about the land and its people?

Join Vince LaPena, TEK Manager for Wilton Rancheria’s Department of Cultural Preservation, for an educational evening walk through the Ancil Hoffman Nature Study Area. Explore the connections between local biodiversity, Traditional Ecological Knowledge, and the cultural landscape of the Nisenan and Miwok peoples. 🌱
