Iron tsuba Daisho with chrysanthemum, ginger and wild geese design Myoga ginger and wild goose openwork design, 1/4 bu polished ground, chrysanthemum shape, openwork carving.
The beautiful, glossy quarto-polished surface features intertwined ginger blossoms at the top and bottom, and two wild geese carved into each of the four sides. The wild geese are neatly arranged in the same direction, creating a rhythmic pattern. The handles are shaped like chrysanthemums, and the two openings are combined with large ginger blossoms carved with fine hair detailing, resulting in a stylish and sophisticated design.
This sword guard is believed to have been made by a metalworker of the Bushu Ito school. The Bushu Ito school was employed by the Edo shogunate as a specialist in sword guards, and the lineage spanned ten generations, with many disciples. Their excellent designs are considered on par with those of Akasaka-go, but while Akasaka-ren focused on practicality and elegance, Ito-go is said to have focused on both practicality and decoration. Late Edo period openwork.
A Wild Geese and Ginger (Daki-myoga Karigane) tsuba is a symbolic design combining Japanese ginger shoots (myoga) and stylized wild geese (karigane). It represents a popular good-luck motif often seen on Edo-period iron tsuba, symbolizing "divine protection" (myoga) and autumnal, migratory.
