River Valley Pioneer Museum Canadian's River Valley Pioneer Museum offers historic interpretation of the settlement period in th Hemphill County has a rich human history too.

From Spanish conquistadores and Indian battles to railroads and oil booms, Hemphill County, Texas, has seen it all. Located in the northeast Panhandle, Hemphill County is a land of sage-covered sand hills and rolling breaks, with towering buttes and deep canyons cut by the Canadian River. It is a place once inhabited by the ancient mammoth and mastodon and, more recently, thundering herds of bison. It was home to the Kiowa, Comanche, and Cheyenne and was crossed by Coronado’s famous expedition in 1540. American Indian fights, such as the Battle of Buffalo Wallow, also occurred here. Canadian, the county seat, has a history of its own. This oasis located on the banks of the Canadian River was the site of the first rodeo in Texas and a stop on the Santa Fe Railway. Other commerce soon followed, including a successful ranching and farming culture, as well as many thriving oil and natural gas industries. So, come by and experience our history--it's alive and kicking!

40 Artifacts for 40 Years — Artifact #29: The Rock Schoolhouse

Before Canadian had a school system as we know it today, education was much simpler—and much smaller.

In 1885, a few settlers built the first school in Hemphill County, a one-room building near the junction of the Wichita River and Gageby Creek. As Canadian grew, the community recognized the need for a school in town.

Construction on the rock schoolhouse began in the fall of 1887 and was completed by May 1888. Located on 4th Avenue between Main and Kingman Streets, the stone building quickly became too small and crowded. A frame addition was added by 1895.

Among the teachers who taught in those early classrooms was Mary Katherine Brainard Isaacs, who came to Canadian in 1888 and taught until 1895. Annie Baker, whose lawyer father Benjamin M. Baker had served as the state's first Commissioner of Education. Miss Baker is seen in the 1900 picture with the students, can you find her?

40 Artifacts for 40 Years - Artifact #28: Gene Howe Wildlife Management Area & Lake Marvin

From the wildlife of Gene Howe to the waters of Lake Marvin, this week’s artifacts celebrate the natural history of Hemphill County—and the people who helped us understand it.

A.S. Jackson, a field biologist and longtime conservationist, spent decades studying local wildlife. As manager of the Gene Howe Wildlife Management Area beginning in 1950, he made lasting contributions to quail research and wildlife conservation across the Texas Panhandle.

Jackson also documented the beauty of our native landscape, including the Cat Creek cottonwood trees featured in his photographs.

After a prolonged drought, recent flooding rains may bring much-needed moisture, but they can also mean runoff, erosion, and changes to local habitats. How the land and waterways respond will be part of our ongoing story.

Come explore the people, places, and wildlife that make Hemphill County unique at the River Valley Pioneer Museum—Caretakers of Hemphill County History.
