Where Banking & Ranching Meet
In Hemphill County, banking and ranching have always been closely connected. Cattle built much of the local economy, and banks provided the financial foundation that helped the area's ranching industry grow.
Even the checks in this artifact tell that story.
Look closely at the historic First National Bank of Canadian check. Featured prominently across the check is an image of cattle, a fitting symbol of the industry that helped shape Canadian and Hemphill County. The imagery reminds us that the business of banking was closely tied to the business of cattle.
Prominent ranching families such as the Moodys, Studers, Isaacs and Brainards were also involved in Canadian's banking history, illustrating just how closely the two worlds were intertwined.
For generations, cattle, credit and commerce worked together to build Canadian.
