Two different hands, two different traditions.

Janet Yazzie, a Diné (Navajo) painter, brings bold, colorful canvases to this year's market. Brent Learned, of Cheyenne and Arapaho heritage, works in ledger drawing, a storytelling form with roots in the historic plains tribes, where paper and pencil replaced hide and pigment.

Both artists join us October 17–18 for the third annual Native American Art Market, alongside Canadian's Fall Foliage Festival.

Vastness has a way of shaping an artist.

For the women who painted West Texas in the early twentieth century, exposure to art often meant a single object carried across the frontier. A reproduction of an Old Master, a book, a publication passed hand to hand. From that isolation came improvisation, and work that holds its own against anything coming out of the established art centers of the East.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐫 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 exhibit spans landscapes, ranch scenes, architecture, portraiture and still life. There are forty-two works attributed to twenty-nine women, and decades of West Texas seen through their eyes.

Last weekend, our first Spanish-language art history and art-making class, led by Estefany, had a wonderful turnout!

Gracias a todos los que vinieron. Su entusiasmo hizo que esta primera clase fuera inolvidable, y ya estamos emocionados por la próxima. (Thank you to everyone who came. Your enthusiasm made this first class unforgettable, and we're already excited for the next one).

A Preview of What's Coming

Inlaid jewelry from Santo Domingo Pueblo. Silver and turquoise, intricately worked, from Diné artisans. Carved knives and flutes shaped by Choctaw hands, alongside sand-textured paintings, cottonwood root katsinas and fine prints from the Hopi tradition.

There will be pottery animals from the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, work from Nlaka'pamux artists, and canvases painted in bold color by Diné painters. From Zuni Pueblo, multimedia pieces that push tradition into new form. Ledger drawings rooted in Cheyenne and Arapaho storytelling. Silver jewelry from Jemez Pueblo, and silver tufa cast pieces shaped in the Diné tradition.

Nine tribal nations. A weekend of craft passed down, refined, and offered by hand.

In 1923, San Angelo artist Mollie Crowther became the first West Texas woman to exhibit in Fort Worth's annual Texas artists exhibition. Four years later, she exhibited at the first San Antonio Competitive Exhibition alongside fellow West Texans Berla Ione Emeree and Jessie Palmer.

Her work, and theirs, is part of 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀: 𝙀𝙖𝙧𝙡𝙮 𝙒𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣 𝘼𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙒𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙏𝙚𝙭𝙖𝙨, on view now at The Citadelle.

By the early 1920s, women were organizing art communities from Dalhart and Amarillo through Lubbock, Abilene and San Angelo, west to Alpine and El Paso.

They studied in Chicago, New York and Philadelphia, then returned to teach, exhibit and build an artistic life across West Texas that had not existed before them.

The West in Her Hands: Early Women Artists of West Texas gathers the work of twenty-nine of these artists, on view now through December.
