What do the Hotel Ponce de Leon in St. Augustine and Cairnwood Estate have in common? Surprisingly… doorknobs!

Both buildings were designed by renowned architects Carrère & Hastings, with the Hotel Ponce de Leon completed in 1887 and Cairnwood following in 1895. Visitors to both properties can still find the same distinctive bronze scallop shell doorknobs and decorative key plates throughout the buildings.
John Pitcairn and Henry Flagler moved in similar business circles through the oil industry, and a Carrère & Hastings publication featuring the architects’ Florida hotel design was even preserved among the Pitcairn family’s personal library.
It’s a small detail most visitors would never notice, but these elegant doorknobs quietly connect two of Carrère & Hastings’ earliest masterpieces.
