Hey all! 😄 Artist Michelle Ramin will be taking over the Instagram account this weekend! You may remember her stunning colored pencil artworks from MICA 2023 & 2024, making her the perfect BTS Artist for the CPSA Juried Exhibition! ✏
👉 Hailing from the mountains of North Central Pennsylvania, Michelle Ramin received her BA from Penn State University and her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Ramin has exhibited nationally, including at Southern Exposure in San Francisco, SOHO20 Chelsea Gallery in NYC, Jonathan Ferrara Gallery in New Orleans, The Pennsylvania College of Technology, and Russo Lee Gallery in Portland, OR. Ramin’s work has been featured in such publications as New American Paintings, SF Weekly, Beautiful Decay, The Brooklyn Rail, and Art Ltd. Magazine, to name a few. Ramin has also been awarded the prestigious San Francisco Bay Guardian 2014 Goldie Award for Excellence in Visual Art, a fully funded solo exhibition as part of the Stumptown Artist Fellowship Program, numerous Clark College Professional Development grants, and, a jury prize in Brea Gallery’s 2023 "Made in California" exhibition. Michelle's work is also included in the Jimenez-Colon permanent collection in Puerto Rico as well as many other private collections across the country.
Beyond her work as an artist, Michelle has taught drawing and painting courses at the San Francisco Art Institute, City College of San Francisco, and Clark College in Vancouver, WA where she was also the Curator & Director of Archer Gallery and the Clark Art Talks artist and art scholar lecture series.
Michelle currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA, and is Assistant Professor of Art and the Curator & Director of Norco College () at Norco College.

Renee Reid with her artwork "Me and My Peeps," 2024 🥰 Winner of the Holbein Yoshio Kawami Award for Distinction
👉 "The drawing, Me and My Peeps, is a self-portrait based on a photo Renee took of herself. Her posture displayed a mix of strength and guard. She felt something missing from the scene and immediately thought of the birds she would see in her backyard and on nature walks. She always paused to admire them while listening to their calls and songs. Renee thought they would be perfect companions on this journey."

👉 "Karina Vazquez is a Mexican born, self-taught visual artist based in Long Beach, CA. Her artistic journey began in street photography, but decided to explore mediums that allowed her to stay indoors... Inspiration is sourced from all aspects of life; relationships, nature, her personal encounters and perceptions as an immigrant, and the overall human experience. Plant life is used in order to denote the symbiosis between humanity and the natural world. This is articulated through delicate graphite shading, loose painterly marks, and a subdued color palette. She hopes that her work can provide a moment of pause and reflection for the viewer."

👉 "Julie Beloussow is a visual artist based in Long Beach, CA. Her work explores themes of perception, neurodiversity, and self-identity. Motivated by a desire to raise awareness of neurological deviation, her contemporary psychedelic artwork is guided by her own story of living with conditions such as ADHD and Autism."

"Beetle," 2024 by Richard Helmick 🐞 Colored Pencil on Watercolor Paper 🤔 Curious about how Richard achieved such a smooth, almost paint-like, application?
Well, luckily Richard was gracious enough to share some insight into his process!
👉 "To achieve hard crisp color area edges, I first cover the entire substrate (watercolor paper) with wide strips of masking tape. Then I cut a stencil openings from the masking tape surface. [After,] I apply colored pencil colors to the exposed watercolor paper. I dampen stencil brushes with mineral oil and scrub the colored pencil colors. The colored pencil pigment dissolves in the mineral oil allowing me to cover areas evenly and smoothly. When the colored pencil work is complete, I protect everything with a couple of coats of spray lacquer. I then strip away the remaining masking tape stencil to expose the raw watercolor paper."

Tevin's preferred subject matter is flowers, which he brings to life with vibrant colors and meticulous attention to shading and texture."

👉 Brea Fest is a family event that is the “tastiest” celebration of the year! Guests are invited to sample delicious food and beverages donated from local restaurants while listening to live music. Enjoy exhibitions in the Gallery, demonstrating artists, live theater performances, shopping in market row, and much more! “Kidsville” is sponsored by North Hills Church and includes face painting, balloon animals, make-and-take crafts, a bounce house and kid-friendly foods.
🎟 Brea Fest admission and entertainment are free. There is a nominal charge of $4 per ticket that can be used for food and/or beverages. Proceeds from the event support Brea’s Art Programs, such as the Curtis Theatre, Brea Art Gallery, and Concerts in the Park!

All the artwork has left the building! 🕺 That means it’s time for gallery repairs! After removing all screws and nails, we sand down holes to prepare for patching. We clean up the walls, fill the holes, sand again, clean again, sand again, clean again… you get the idea 🤭 since it’s the end of the year, the gallery will be receiving a full new coat of fresh paint! Capturing the whirlwind of emotions in “Pandemic Time Warp”. 2020 was a rollercoaster of feelings during the global pandemic. My latest artwork mirrors that journey: 200 feet of tubing wrapped with black and red linen, each coil a moment in time. Red for neutral/good days, black for sadness/pain. The breaks mark artificial endpoints, providing structure in chaos. Collaborated on a musical component reflecting time intervals/emotional states. The City of Brea Art Gallery has been presenting a full schedule of exhibitions each year since 1980 and the facility’s 6,000 square foot exhibition space is home to artwork from around the world. In conjunction with each exhibit, the Brea Art Gallery offers educational programs, art workshops for children and adults, lectures and demonstrations. We are open 12 noon - 5pm Wednesday to Sunday during exhibits.
