Matilda Sissieretta Joyner Jones, known as Sissieretta Jones, (1868 or 1869 -1933) was an American soprano whose repertoire included grand opera, light opera, and popular music. She trained at the Providence Academy of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music. In 1888, Jones made her New York debut at Steinway Hall and four years later she performed at the White House for President Benjamin Harrison. She eventually sang for four consecutive presidents and the British royal family, and met with international success performing around the world. She was the highest-paid African-American performer of her time.

On this Juneteenth, we feature a black composer who was not American but was closely tied to African-American history. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (d. 1912) was born in London in 1875. His father was descended from African-American slaves who were freed and evacuated by the British at the end of the American Revolution. Coleridge-Taylor became known in New York as the "African Mahler." Probably his most famous works are the three cantatas based on Longfellow's epic poem "The Song of Hiawatha." Coleridge-Taylor was interested in his American roots and American culture and at one time thought about emigrating to the United States. He died before he was 40 but was a well-respected composer and conductor who penned some of the most beautiful compositions of the late 19th century.

Symphony No.1 in A flat major "Afro-American" - William Grant Still

Today's African-American composer is the prolific William Grant Still (1895-1978). He created over 200 musical compositions from symphonies and operas to arrangements for Hollywood films. Still's first major orchestral composition, Symphony No. 1 "Afro-American", was first performed in 1931 by the Rochester Philharmonic. By the end of World War II, the piece had been performed in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Berlin, Paris, and London. The work is so evocative and uniquely American. It's easy to see why Still is known as the "Dean of Afro-American Composers."

Florence Price Symphony No 1 in E minor

African-American composer Florence Price (1887-1953) is not a household name, and yet she wrote some of the most beautiful music ever created by an American composer. She was not only the first African-America woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer but the first to have a composition played by a major orchestra. In 2009, a treasure trove of lost scores by Price was discovered in an abandoned house in St. Anne, Illinois. Since then, there has been a resurgence of interest in her work. Take a listen to her wonderful Symphony No. 1 in E Minor, which shows the influence of Dvorak.

Did you know that June is African-American Music Appreciation Month? The designation was created by President Carter in 1979 as Black Music Month and was renamed by President Barack Obama in 2009. Obama noted that African-American music and musicians have helped the country "to dance, to express our faith through song, to march against injustice, and to defend our country's enduring promise of freedom and opportunity for all." All this week, we will be featuring African Americans who have contributed to our nation's rich musical heritage.

Why do orchestras need a conductor?

If you're one of the many people who don't know what a conductor actually "does", this is a great read!

A conductor has got one of the most visible jobs in the world, but despite this, many people are completely baffled by what they actually DO. What difference are they making? Would the orchestra still play without them? And why do they sweat so much?
