HAPPY NATIONAL AVIATION DAY!!!

Today, we celebrate the industry that truly keeps the world in motion!

Aviation connects individuals across the globe, safeguards our nation, and ensures we reach our destinations faster than ever before! Can you imagine where we would be without aircraft?

Additionally, a heartfelt thank you goes to Mayor Randall Woodfin and the City of Birmingham for the official proclamation of Aviation Day, which was presented to our very own Dr. Brian Barsanti and Ignacio Pullum!

The Southern Museum of Flight remains committed to showcasing remarkable aviation history, preserving valuable artifacts, and training the future leaders of this vital industry!

It’s National Aviation Day, an annual commemoration honoring the history of aviation in the United States and celebrating the contributions of its many pioneers. What a perfect day to visit us at the museum!

National Aviation Day was first proclaimed in 1939 by Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt, who chose August 19 because it was the birthday of Orville Wright. Remember him? ;) Orville and older brother Wilbur designed and built the world’s first successful powered airplane. Their 12-second, groundbreaking flight occurred near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17, 1903.

While you’re here, check out our full-size replica of the 1903 Wright Flyer, and find out about the brothers’ connection to Alabama — Really! Come see us, and we’ll tell you all about it. In fact, you can learn about the whole history of flight through our exciting combination of aircraft, dioramas, aviation memorabilia and engaging videos. See you soon!

Meet Fifi --- Isn't she adorable!

Fifi is a Boeing B-29 Superfortress, and she’s coming to town next week with several of her best friends: A North American B-25 Mitchell medium bomber. A Stearman PT-13 Kaydet primary trainer. A North American T-6 Texan advanced trainer. AND a Beechcraft RC-45J that was affectionately known as the Big Oily Beast.

You can see them all when the Airpower History Tour comes to Million Air FBO next week, Wednesday – Sunday — August 12 – 16.

Million Air is an invaluable museum partner, which is why we’re offering Free Admission to everyone bringing their ticket from the show to visit us afterward. We’re just two blocks down the street!
