We recently celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Hyser House moving to its new home on West River Dr. NE to become the Hyser Rivers Museum.

We are privileged to have one of the original members of the first PCT Historical Commission, Sharon Wells, currently continue to serve on our Plainfield Grand Rogue Historical Society Board of Directors -- that's FIFTY YEARS OF SERVICE!

Thank you Sharon, and all the community members who have given their time to preserve this unique part of history -- the only historical site in Plainfield Charter Township sanctioned by the State of Michigan.

Some of the PGRHS board and members were fortunate to tour the Grand Rapids Public Museum Archive. We got some great advice for organizing our PGRHS Archive, plus they're willing to train our volunteers! Here are some of the amazing items stored there.

PGRHS members met at Oakview Community Church for a special tour of the archive. Items stored from 50 years of collecting are now being unpacked, logged, checked for an accession record and in some cases, added where necessary.

A new feature was added to the meeting: the Traveling Gift Shop! Some of the items that will be for sale at the museum are now available at member meetings or other off-site locations.

Going through the books in our archive collection always pops up some fascinating things! How about some c. 1916-1918 hand drawn sketches of the Catholic Central High School logos and pennants in the back pages of an old schoolbook! 🏫 ✏️

On July 8, 1776, when Colonel John Nixon first read the Declaration of Independence aloud in Philadelphia’s State House Yard, he wasn’t simply announcing a break with Britain—he was voicing a radical idea: that legitimate power comes from the consent of the governed, not from the crown or the sword. In that moment, a public reading became a public promise—one we are still striving to keep.

Born in Hawai‘i as a community tradition, Sharing the Spirit of America has grown, neighbor‑to‑neighbor, into a nationwide event—across all 50 states and the nine U.S. territories—of publicly reading the Declaration of Independence on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at precisely the same time that John Nixon first read it, 6:00 PM EDT.

will be Sharing the Spirit of America with a public reading of the Declaration of Independence - July 8, 2026, 6:00 PM

Riverfront Stage in Garden Club Park, Rockford along the Rogue River, in downtown Rockford.

The event will begin at 5:30 p.m., with reading starting promptly at 6 p.m. All are welcome to participate in this nationwide, simultaneous event.

Please bring a chair. Restrooms are available. ADA parking and wheelchair accessible.

No RSVP necessary.

You’re invited!
Join in the fun and help celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday at our annual Northview area 4th of July Parade and Celebration!

Saturday, July 4, 2026 | 9:30am Parade Start

Hosted by the Northville Park Association.

The parade route begins at the corner of Plainfield Avenue and Northville Drive at Freedom Remodeling (4214 Plainfield Ave, previously Enterprise Car Rental) and ends at Northville Park (2800 Leelanau Drive) with flag raising and singing of The Star Spangled Banner by members of the Northview Public Schools music program.

Members of the community are welcome to join the parade by decorating vehicles, golf carts, bicycles, or simply walking in the parade! Businesses are encouraged to decorate their own vehicles or floats and pass out items to residents along the parade route. We hope you’ll consider joining us at this long-standing Northview area tradition!

TIME FOR SUMMER FUN & SPECIAL PROJECTS!

The PGRHS member meetings will change locations and introduce new activities through the months of June, July and August. Members are invited to join the board in interesting projects for those who enjoy more in depth research.

We started this morning at the Oakview Community Church where we have a special storage unit. PGRHS Members Beth Byrne, Mary Harris, Deb Havens, Marilyn McGraw and Guy Jacobson played history detectives as boxes and filing cabinet drawers were opened and sorted, to catalog and organize our artifacts.

We meet again next Thursday, June 25 at 9am at the church to continue the exploration! If you enjoy a deep dive into local history, please join us!

When you start the morning with Marilyn's incredible coffee cake -- and the coffee -- you can hardly go wrong! Lots of fun and one truly amazing discovery we think has been hidden for 50 years. More on that later.

The PGRHS A250MI Committee has generated a number of activities to honor our nation's birthday, including patriotic displays. We've featured those at the KDL- Plainfield branch earlier.

Our A250MI Committee members have struck again! This time with the display cases in the lobby at Plainfield Charter Township. Featuring adorable teddy bears from private collections, you really have to stop by to see it in person to fully appreciate the details.

Thanks again to A250MI Chair Mary Harris for organizing this unique way to acknowledge our nation's SemiQuinCentennial!

And BTW, if you have a unique collection you would like to share, let us know! The Plainfield Charter Township lobby is a perfect place to showcase your items in unique displays.

As we posted earlier, the Plainfield Grand Rogue Society Docents welcomed fifth grade students from Highlands Middle School on two Fridays in May for tours of the Hyser Rivers Museum.

We were so pleased when Abby Lago returned with her family during our Sunday Open House. She was able to show her mom and sister two of the unusual artifacts in the museum collection: clam shells from the Grand River in the early 1900s, drilled to create buttons before plastic took over the industry.

Abby, we are so proud of you, and grateful for your return with your family!
