It's America's 250th birthday this year! The PGRHS America250MI Committee recently worked with the Kent District Library, Plainfield Branch, to create patriotic displays.

Our sincere appreciation to the KDL- Plainfield staff for allowing us to install these displays in observance of the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence: Regional Director Penni Zurgable, Jessica Weber, Assistant Branch Librarian, the Creative Sparks Group, and staff. They worked with committee members Marilyn McGraw, Sharon Wells, long time member of Friends of the Library, and committee chair, Mary Harris.

The display at the library Circulation Desk is at child's-eye height, but take a moment to enjoy it with your kids! There are also displays in the Magazine Room highlighting a selection of classic books for sale that speak to the history of our country.

A huge thanks to our America250MI committee members, Mary, Sharon and Marilyn, who are moving on to decorate the display cases in the Plainfield Charter Township lobby.

The library displays and those in the township lobby serve to honor our great national anniversary and hopefully stirs the passion for patriotism in the heart of every American.

The Plainfield Grand Rogue Historical Society hosted the Memorial Day Observance at Charles Weldon Veterans Memorial Park on Saturday, May 23. The day was cloudy and cool, the mood was somber. It was a fitting acknowledgement of our nation's loss of so many who gave their lives to preserve our American values and cherished freedoms.

Special thanks to participants in the day's observance:

Remarks and hours of organization efforts, Ron Howell, Vietnam Veteran, Co-Chair, Veterans Caucus; Brian Brinkman, Desert Shield Veteran, 24th Mechanized Infantry Division, who placed the memorial wreath at the foot of the monument; Presentation of Colors with Commander Tom Mroczkowski, American Legion Post 102, Rockford; Commander Courtney Peden, Kent County Veterans Honor Guard Rifle Salute; Daniel Smith, Scout Troup 283 B, who led the Pledge of Allegiance; and the very moving rendition of "Taps" performed by Will Garland, Comstock Park High School graduating senior.

We are planning to post a video of the observance soon.

As part of our salute to America's 250th birthday, we are presenting programs that highlight the march through history that began in 1776. Many thanks to PGRHS Board Member Jerry Berg for demonstrating the swordsmanship that was part of the infantry armament -- despite the withering force of musketry carried on both sides.

Jerry will also host a Revolutionary War encampment on the grounds of the Hyser Rivers Museum on Saturday and Sunday, September 12 & 13. The museum will also be open for tours. More details as we approach the date.

Thanks again, Jerry Berg, founder of the Swordsmanship Museum and Academy!

Thanks to Betty Roberts and her daughter, Beth Dornan, for an absolutely wonderful program at our PGRHS membership meeting. Betty started her career as a secretary in the U.S. State Department and ended up very comfortable in the halls of Congress.

An avid seamstress, she was one of the few who obtained a license to incorporate the Bicentennial seal into her patterns for a skirt as well as pillows, quilts and embroidery kits. Her work became so popular she was invited to present from England to Australia.

Her creations became gifts to her Congressman in the Grand Haven district where she lived at the time. He introduced her to President Gerald Ford in recognition of the beautiful and unique craftsmanship of her special Bicentennial salute.

The quilt she presented to President Ford now has a home in the Ford Museum in Grand Rapids. The skirt she designed and wore during the Bicentennial year became a permanent gift to the Smithsonian Institution. Betty and her family plan to visit this year to see it on display.

Thank you so much, Betty. You make us proud!

THE SKIRT THAT WENT TO WASHINGTON!

Fifty Years ago, Betty Boyink Roberts stitched a special skirt to celebrate the American Bicentennial.

This year, her skirt will be displayed at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D. C.

Meet Betty and hear her special Bicentennial story during America’s 250th Birthday.

With all the flooding happening, we thought we would share this image of Plainfield Village flooding from 1904!
The image was taken from the bluffs where Blythefield Country Club now stands. The bridge you see would later on become the Northland drive bridge.
The buildings you see in the foreground would all eventually be destroyed, whereas the far side of the bridge, only wilderness in the image, would eventually be the busy area of Northland drive. Anna's House, Rio Grand Steakhouse, and Versluis Park (among many others) would be visible in this image if it were taken today.

Thanks to Plainfield Charter Township for posting photos of Holly Jolly Holidays that took place last week. The Plainfield Grand Rogue Historical Society makes sure that Santa and Mrs. Claus attend Holly Jolly Holidays every year! Santa is the highlight of the event as he lights the beautiful Christmas tree, then spends time with each family taking pictures and listening to their hopes for a happy holiday❤️.

We love providing this warm traditional experience for our township -- we've already scheduled Santa's special appearance in 2026 (it's our secret North Pole connection!).

Thank you, Plainfield Township for these photos, and for our wonderful Fire Fighters who are such an exciting part of the evening when they arrive in that big red truck!

The Plainfield Grand Rogue Historical Society wishes everyone the happiest of holidays!
