On Saturday, grab coffee or breakfast on Belleville Main Street, then meet us on the square at 10 a.m. for the 2026 Belleville Walk of Fame Induction Ceremony!

At the event, Henry Raab, a master teacher, and Jacob Brosius, an inventive manufacturer, will be enshrined on the Belleville Walk of Fame.

This is a free event that is open to the public, so please join for the ceremony to learn a little bit about two people who helped to shape Belleville!

You're invited to join us on Sunday from 1-3 p.m. at the Museum of Mid-Century Modern Architecture & Design (6 Oak Knoll Place) for an art show featuring the work of artist Michael Anderson! Christy Vineyard and Nancy Schulte of Local Lucy's check out the plaque on their building, located at 122 East Main Street. It tells the story of the building’s original tenant: Wm. Huff Boot and Shoe Store.

An apprentice shoemaker from Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, William Huff immigrated to Belleville in 1836 and had this building constructed in 1852. His shoe store was on the main floor, while he lived above with his family and rented the rest of the upper floors to Illinois House, George Glanig’s adjacent hotel. The Huff family sold the property in 1906. A major successor was Bridges and Ward Pharmacy, which took over the building in 1925. The pharmacy installed an ornamental cast-iron front and conducted business here for 46 years until Krummrich Pharmacy moved into the building. It closed in 1998, ending the building’s 73-year use as a pharmacy. In 1998, Allison’s Common Scents Shoppe moved into the building and was joined by Dave’s Home Brewing Supplies. They were succeeded in 2012 by Christian Powell’s Happy Hop Homebrew and Gourmet. In 2019, Down the Hall Homebrew moved into the space and was joined by Shoehorn Brewing in 2020. Vineyard and Schulte’s Local Lucy’s gift shop has conducted business here since 2023.

This plaque is one of 16 the Belleville Historical Society has placed in downtown Belleville Main Street.

2026 is coming to an end, and the 2027 Belleville Historical Society Calendar has arrived just in time!

The theme of this year's calendar is Belleville: Then and Now, featuring historic photos of Belleville alongside photos taken from the same angle present day. It's a celebration of the ways Belleville has changed, and in some cases, stayed the same, since its founding in 1814.

On Sunday, members of the Six Mile Chapter of the Children of the American Revolution met at the Historic Garfield Street Saloon Museum to hear Ray Brundege, a park ranger, speak on Illinois in the American Revolution. A trunk load of artifacts augmented his presentation. He demonstrated the finer points of using a haversack and modeled the uniform of a Spanish soldier stationed in 18th-century Louisiana. Thank you for choosing the saloon as your meeting place!

We offer free tours of the Historic Garfield Street Saloon Museum, located at 633 East Garfield Street, by appointment (although donations are appreciated to help us upkeep the space and add new exhibits). Visit bellevillehistoricalsociety.org/garfield-saloon/ to request a tour!
