From Superman to graphic novels, comic books have shaped popular culture for generations. But behind the heroes, villains, and unforgettable stories lies a fascinating history that many people have never heard.

Join us on Wednesday, June 24 at 7 PM for A Closer Look: The Icons in Ink with Dr. Samantha Baskind, an acclaimed scholar whose expertise spans fine art, comics, Jewish cultural history, and visual storytelling. A professor at Cleveland State University and contributor to Smithsonian Magazine, Dr. Baskind brings a unique perspective to the exhibition and the remarkable creators who helped define an entire artistic medium.

This special program offers an insider's look at Icons in Ink: The Jewish Comics Experience, the landmark exhibition currently on view at the Maltz Museum. Through original artwork, rare artifacts, historic comic books, and powerful stories of creativity and identity, the exhibition explores the profound impact Jewish artists and writers have had on the evolution of comics and graphic storytelling.

Dr. Baskind also served as a co-curator of the exhibition, making this a rare opportunity to experience Icons in Ink through the insights of one of the people who helped bring it to life.

Whether you're a comic book enthusiast, art lover, history buff, or simply curious about the stories behind some of the world's most enduring cultural icons, this promises to be an engaging and enlightening evening.

The Maltz Museum is once again honored to present the Maltz Heritage Award – recognizing individuals whose leadership, vision, and humanity have made a profound impact on our community and beyond.

We are proud to announce Tomislav Mihaljevic, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer and Morton L. Mandel CEO Chair of the Cleveland Clinic, as the recipient of the 2026 Maltz Heritage Award. Through his leadership in global healthcare, dedication to advancing research and education, and commitment to improving lives throughout Northeast Ohio, Dr. Mihaljevic embodies the values at the heart of this prestigious recognition.

“This is, needless to say, overwhelming,” Mihaljevic said on stage. “My feeling for tonight is one of true gratitude. An award like this sounds like a spotlight, but it is not really about me because my story has never been a solo act. It’s been a long chain of people who took a moment to help, teach and, most importantly, to encourage me, often when they didn’t have to.”

The Maltz Heritage Award celebrates those who leave an indelible mark on our region through compassion, innovation, and service. Past honorees have included some of Northeast Ohio’s most influential civic and philanthropic leaders, and we are proud to continue this meaningful tradition by recognizing Dr. Mihaljevic’s extraordinary contributions.

The annual Maltz Heritage Award Gala serves as the Museum’s largest fundraiser of the year, supporting educational programming and initiatives that promote acceptance, inclusion, and understanding for all people.

We invite you to learn more about Dr. Mihaljevic, the 2026 Maltz Heritage Award, and the impact of this important celebration by reading the full article below.

⚡️ TONIGHT: Discover the TRUE origin story behind Superman. ⚡️

Long before Superman became one of the most recognizable heroes in the world, he began as the dream of two young Jewish teenagers growing up in Cleveland. Tonight at the Maltz Museum, author Brad Ricca brings that remarkable story to life in “A Closer Look: The Adventures of Siegel and Shuster.”

Recently featured by Superman Homepage, the program dives into the real-life journey of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster – from their Depression-era beginnings in Cleveland to creating a character that would forever change comics, storytelling, and American pop culture.

Through archival visuals, behind-the-scenes discoveries, and live discussion, Brad Ricca reveals the human story behind the cape:

– the inspirations behind Lois Lane
– the mystery surrounding Jerry Siegel’s father
– the heartbreaking sale of Superman for just $130
– and how two local Cleveland teens accidentally created the world’s first superhero

This special evening also connects directly to Icons in Ink, the museum’s immersive exhibition celebrating the artists, writers, and visionaries who transformed comic books into a global cultural force!

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the real-life heroes whose courage, sacrifice, and service continue to shape our nation. While our current exhibition, Icons in Ink, celebrates the superheroes who inspired generations through stories of justice, resilience, and hope – today reminds us of the individuals whose bravery existed far beyond the comic book page.

As we reflect on the meaning of this day, we remember those who gave their lives in service to others and honor the enduring legacy they leave behind for future generations. Wishing everyone a meaningful and reflective Memorial Day, from all of us at The Maltz Museum.
