A Centuries-Old Forest

Sailor’s Haven is home to one of the best known areas of Fire Island National Seashore—the Sunken Forest. It is located near the center of the island, across the Great South Bay from Sayville, New York.

Sunken Forest is a rare ecological community. This type of maritime holly forest, said to be around 300 years old, is found behind well-established sand dunes along the Atlantic coast from New Jersey to Massachusetts. According to the New York Natural Heritage Program, the Sunken Forest was ranked as “globally rare,” meaning there are few remaining occurrences of this assemblage of plants throughout the world.

This Saturday, painters will get to experience painting the beautiful landscapes of Sunken Forest within Sailor’s Haven, Fire Island, during our fourth year of Pleinathon! 🖌️

Registration fee: $40 - includes one roundtrip ferry ticket and entry into the Plein Air art exhibition in the gallery June 10 - 30 🖼️

Spaces available; participants must register before the event to ensure everyone gets their ferry ticket!

***Ferry from Sayville leaves at 9:25am. All participants must arrive between 9-9:15am to get their tickets***

CALL FOR ART!! 🖼️

“En Plein Air” Open Invitation to Plein Air Painters 🖌️

Calling nature lovers and Plein Air Painters!

We are looking to showcase works done “en plein air” or “in the open air” for our upcoming exhibition in conjunction to the Pleinathon Art Show.

Exhibition Period: June 10 - 30, 2026

Plein air painting became most widely known by French Impressionists Monet & Renoir and later by Van Gogh who found beauty and inspiration by the outdoors in which most of their paintings took place. This call for art invites artists to embrace the immediacy of working on-site, translating light, atmosphere, and landscape into expressive, observational pieces that reflect the beauty of the world as it unfolds in real time.

Media considered: Drawings & Paintings (must be done outdoors)

Submission Deadline: May 30

More info and to submit your work visit isliparts.org

COLLECTIVE COLLAGE: Create a Zine or Postcard on World Collage Day ✂️🗺️

Saturday, May 9, 5:30 - 7:30pm

World Collage Day—initiated by Kolaj Magazine in 2018—is an annual international celebration of collage, held every second Saturday of May.

Collage is an art form that combines different images and materials—typically 2D elements—to create a new and unique work of art. Using simple tools like glue or tape, collage is accessible to everyone.

Islip Arts is excited to participate in this year’s celebration by hosting a Collective Collage Workshop. Students can create a postcard (or two) to send to someone they love, or design a mini zine that tells a story, holds poems, or expresses their creativity.
