Eugenia Sentell was born in Bossier Parish on December 27, 1908. She attended Plain Dealing High School and later graduated from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute with a degree in music and economics. While enrolled, she met her eventual husband, Minden City Mayor Robert "Bob" Kennon. The couple married on June 30, 1931, and raised three sons.
Eugenia and Robert moved into the mansion in 1952, and she fell into the role of First Lady with exceptional ease. An avid entertainer, Eugenia hosted lavish affairs and elegant, intimate gatherings. Her spare time was occupied by gardening and baking. After Robert's term as governor concluded, the couple remained in Baton Rouge and stayed active in social and civic circles. Robert died on January 11, 1988. After his death, Eugenia devoted the rest of her life to her children, grandchildren, and her fellow worshipers at First Presbyterian Church in Baton Rouge.
