I’ve been thinking a lot about what butterflies represent to me.

They are certainly beautiful.

But beauty isn’t their real identity.

It’s the transformation.

The idea that something can completely change.

That there is usually a messy seemingly slow stage.

… And somehow, eventually, you emerge with wings.

Maybe that’s why butterflies feel so appropriate for this point of my art journey.

Why I felt the need to paint them.

A lot of them.

I’ve been in the cocoon, and now I’m ready to transform and grow wings.

A little peek inside the studio…

The butterfly collection is growing.

And butterflies in various stages of becoming.

And I started framing the finished ones a few days ago.

These aren’t going to be quiet little butterflies.

They have some personality.

I’ll be sharing the first collection soon.

Details dropping later this week.

Here’s something that made me smile while working on this new collection.

I still have the caterpillar habitat my daughter and I used all those years ago.

I kept it.

I’m not entirely sure why at the time.

But now I know.

Some things carry memories.

And sometimes those memories find their way back into your life when you least expect them.

That little habitat represents a time when my daughter was young, we were planting gardens, searching for caterpillars and watching Monarchs transform before our eyes.

Now I’m painting butterflies.

And I’m already looking forward to doing it all over again with my grandchildren someday.

Maybe this collection is more than a collection after all.

Maybe it’s a little bit of a circle coming back around. 🦋
