Cardinals & Crows in the Garden
Archival pigment ink on German etching paper
Framed size: 20 x 26in

All works in this section are digital paintings, created using software such as Adobe fresco or procreate and printed on archival quality paper. Rather than using a traditional paintbrush, the artists work with a stylus, drawing and painting directly by hand on a digital surface. Every mark is intentional and physically made by the artist, emphasizing that these works are not generated, but crafted through a different set of tools. The intention remains the same: to produce a finished artwork meant to be experienced in its physical form.

This painting commemorates the 1955 Sit-In at Read’s Drug Store in Baltimore, organized by students from Morgan State College and the local chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality. Two days after the protest, The Afro-American ran the headline “Now serve all,” as company president Arthur Nattans Sr. announced immediate desegregation across the chain’s 39 stores. Though not the first desegregation in the city, the action became a turning point that inspired further victories at Arundel Ice Cream and the Northwood Theatre. Occurring five years before the better known sit ins in Greensboro, this courageous stand was a pivotal moment not only in Baltimore history but in the broader history of the Civil Rights Movement, laying groundwork for protests that followed nationwide.
