Until 1883, Pensacola was practically cut off from the rest of Florida by land, and one railroad changed that in just two years. 🚂

The Pensacola and Atlantic Railroad was chartered in 1881 to stretch about 161 miles across the thinly settled Panhandle, from Pensacola east to the Apalachicola River near Chattahoochee. Crews pushed through pine forests, swamps, and river bottoms at a remarkable pace.

The final hurdle was the wide Apalachicola itself. For a few weeks, passengers were ferried across by boat, until the railroad's bridge was completed in April 1883. At last, a traveler could ride from Pensacola to the rest of the state by rail. 🌉

The line's impact is still written on the map. Towns like Crestview, Bonifay, Cottondale, and Chipley grew up along the tracks, and Chipley carries the name of William D. Chipley, the railroad man who drove much of the project. The state rewarded the company with millions of acres of land, and in 1891 the line was folded into the Louisville and Nashville Railroad.

Does your Panhandle hometown owe its start to the tracks that came through in 1883?
