JOHN ZINN TO SPEAK ON THE BROOKLYN DODGERS

It is soon to be World Series time, and what better way to get the fever than to come hear John Zinn talk about the Brooklyn Dodgers? He will be speaking Tuesday, October 20, 2026 in the Atlantic Highlands Arts Gallery, 54 First Avenue, Atlantic Highlands. The talk will begin at 7:30 pm and is part of the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society’s America 250 Series.

Mr. Zinn is a baseball historian and has written five books, including three about the Brooklyn Dodgers. His biography of Charles Ebbetts won the 2018 Ron Gabriel Award. He has also written numerous essays and has a blog on baseball history. He is chairman of the board of the New Jersey Historical Society and chair of New Jersey’s Committee on the Civil War Sesquicentennial.

The talk is open to the public and admission is free. Donations are accepted.

As you may be aware, the Strauss Mansion Museum had a devastating incident over this past winter. During the extremely cold week in February, the mansion lost power and, as a result, had no heat. This caused a pipe in the second floor bathroom to burst, leading to significant flooding on the second floor, as well as the downstairs kitchen, bathroom and basement. Fortunately, it was determined that the flooding occurred within in a single day, as someone was there the day before and the day after the incident. We have settled the claim with our insurance carrier and are now in the process of restoration of the damaged areas of the mansion, so that we can be ready to open up next year. While the insurance will cover the cost of repairs, it does not address the loss of income from the events during 2026 that take place at the mansion. This includes our weekly open house donations, our monthly lecture donations, monthly Music at the Mansion, Porch Supper, Victorian Tea, gift shop purchases and all of the events that take place during October and December. We were also unable to have our annual Arts and Crafts Fair this year due to weather predictions. Although we did undertake fundraisers off-site, the most recent of which was our annual Flea Market of September 12th, we have been unable to open the mansion for the 2026 season.

Thanks to all who came out to support us on Saturday at the Harbor! Reminder, this is Tuesday, September 15th at 7:30 pm is the next event for the speaker series of the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society in celebration of America 250. It is a presentation about the history of the women’s suffrage moment in New Jersey. The talk will be given at The Atlantic Highlands Art Council Gallery, 54 First Avenue, Atlantic Highlands. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.

Reminder: Saturday September 12, 2026 will be our 46th annual outdoor flea market at the Marina. The rain date is September 19th. The market will feature antiques, collectibles, and crafts, including new merchandise, as well as some second time around goodies one and all can use.

The Society will be selling food and refreshments. There will also be the signature "Treasures Or" table and a chance auction, with proceeds going to the restoration of our Strauss Mansion Museum. Join us for a great day. Browse, make some purchases, have lunch, and enjoy the Marina. Hoping to see you there!

Thank you to all who came out for the history cruise! Our next event is the annual outdoor flea market, which will be held Saturday, September 12, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM This is the 46th annual Atlantic Highlands Historical Society flea market and will be held at the Marina. The rain date is Saturday September 19.

The market will feature antiques, collectibles, and crafts, including new merchandise as well as some second time around goodies one and all can use.

A variety of household items, many furniture items, vintage and new jewelry, tools, toys, clothing, bottles, books, postcards, fishing and boating equipment, old and new plants, flowers, and lots more will be available. There is truly something for everyone.

The Society will be selling food and refreshments. There will also be a treasurer's table and a chance auction, with proceeds going to the restoration of our Strauss Mansion Museum.
