Institute for Electronic Arts The Institute for Electronic Arts is an art and technology research studio within the School of Art and Design, NYSCC, Alfred University, New York.

The iea offers time, space, facilities, and support for artists to engage with their research proposals. IEA programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and the Schein-Joseph Endowment. The IEA encourages and supports projects that involve interactive multi-media systems, experimental sonic/vid

eo production, digital imaging, and publications. The IEA is committed to developing cultural interactions spurred by technological experimentation and artistic investigations.

On Sunday, June 21, 2026 Philip Gresham (Philip Gresham) completed his one-week residency with us!

Phil’s primary focus of this residency was working with the iea’s XY plotter for copperplate etchings. Keeping busy in this short one-week residency, Phil also incorporated screen print, laser cutting, and chine collé.

The iea welcomes Philip Gresham (Philip Gresham) to our Print + New Media Artist-in-Residence program!

Philip Gresham is a printmaker living and working in Rocheport, MO. He completed his BFA at the Kansas City Art Institute in 2010 and is currently a MFA candidate at the University of Missouri Columbia. He is an active member of the printmaking community and currently serves as exhibitions committee chair for the Southern Graphics Council International.

On Sunday, June 7, 2026 Lili Chin completed her three-week New Media residency with us!

Lili said the following about her residency: “My project surrounded the theme of nuclear energy and nuclear fallout. I filmed a lot of microscopic images of particles from the raw materials ceramic lab, materials that are somewhat toxic and bentonite which was used in uranium enrichment. I also filmed microfilm with the microscope and made banding effects with the Sandin. I also made sound recordings using the doepfer synthesizer, created video clips using the Sandin analogue video synth and created a sketch of three channel video and a mockup for an installation with dye sublimated prints.”

iea Director Myles Calvert has joined the Advisory Board for the Tamarind Institute (), University of New Mexico!

The Board kicked off a packed 3-day annual retreat in Portland, OR, building major printmaking connections. Highlights included:
✨ A tour of with owner/Director Jane Beebe.
✨ Visiting to see Mark R. Smith’s work (plus spotting prints by Kiki Smith and Ann Hamilton!).
✨ A guided tour of the Hockney exhibition at with Senior Curator Mary Weaver Chapin, plus a look at historic Tamarind-printed works by Paul Harris and a selection of prints from local Inkling Studio (1981-2009)
✨ An exclusive look at the collection—touring 20,000+ contemporary artworks with Jordan Schnitzer himself!
✨ Wrapping up at the studio of the incredible for a discussion on future projects and print magic.

The above paired with inspiring conversation over group meals strongly hints that the future of printmaking is bright, with massive opportunities ahead for students, artists, and exhibitions! We even snagged the first edition of the Tamarind ‘bible’ from !

Rita MacDonald during her 2024 iea residency: “I use patterns from textiles as my starting point to explore the experience of place through its relationship to perception, and I’m primarily interested in exploiting the work’s formal ability to toggle between being read as a minimalist abstraction, and being read as a recognizable observations of a piece of everyday decor.”

Summer projects in the iea are moving full steam ahead!

We are excited to have partnered with Denison University (Granville, OH) to host Mac Quimbar as our Summer Intern!

Mac Quimbar is from San Antonio, TX and is currently pursuing a BFA in visual arts with a minor in cinema. Mostly using drawing and printmaking techniques, his art centers around identity as well as human connections and relationships.

For the next two months Mac will be assisting with the day-to-day operations of the iea, including support for our AIR Phil Gresham, archiving of digital and physical works on paper that have been produced since our founding in 1997, and getting us ready to change physical locations! Hold tight for more news about that physical endeavor!

Welcome, Mac and thank you to Denison for this fantastic opportunity for both of our institutions!
