Agyei’s work in Fihankra (You did not say goodbye when you left home) mirrors his own experience of navigating multiple cultural communities—from Ghanaian ethnic groups to life in Florida and beyond. The sculptures suggest that identity is not fixed but assembled, fragile, and adaptable, balanced by care, tension, and a thread of continuity.
On view through July 19th.

At the heart of Fihankra (You did not say goodbye when you left home) are Adinkra symbols, each holding layered meanings—from the call to return home to reflections on security and solidarity. Agyei combines these symbols with wooden benches, batik fabric, yarn, and found objects, creating assemblages that reimagine tradition while reflecting on the shifting nature of identity.

From ceremonial vessels to protest shields and gargantuan necklaces, Sharif Bey’s work embodies a dialogue between function and figuration. Autoethnography examines his exploration of identity within broader cultural histories, inviting viewers to consider their own connections to heritage and tradition.
On view through July 19th.

Yesterday we had the honor of celebrating the one and only Susan Kowalczyk on 30 years of service to the Alfred Ceramic Art Museum!
Susan is responsible for all aspects involving the museum’s collection including care and preservation, documentation, handling and movement, photography, loans and public interface. Susan was hired through a national search as the first registrar of the museum in 1996. During her tenure she has worn many hats and has facilitated or curated 36 exhibitions, produced 25 Ceramophile newsletters and three museum catalogs. In 2019 she was awarded the State University of New York Chancellor's Award of Excellence in Professional Service. It is no exaggeration to say that the Museum would not be here without her. Congratulations Susan 🎉

Thank you to Dean Lauren Lake of the School of Art and Design for facilitating the gifts of handblown glass. The purple and gold vase was made by Tom Ryder BFA '09 .

At ten years old, Sharif Bey encountered an nkisi n’kondi at the Carnegie Museum—a figure that would shape his artistic vision. Autoethnography traces how that early experience, along with diverse cultural influences, continues to inform his work today, creating objects that are both intimate and monumental.

Fihankra (You did not say goodbye when you left home) is Eugene Ofori Agyei’s first exhibition at Alfred University, presenting sculptures made during his time as Turner Teaching Fellow. Drawing on Adinkra symbols from his Ghanaian heritage, Agyei’s mixed-media works explore the complexities of diasporic identity and the tension between memory, tradition, and reinvention. On view through July 19th.

Autoethnography, a solo exhibition by Sharif Bey, brings together key bodies of his work—from wheel-thrown vessels to monumental figurative sculptures. Through these forms, Bey explores the power of objects as vessels of spirit, ancestry, and energy. On view at the Alfred Ceramic Art Museum through July 19th.
