The William King Museum of Art is a non-profit regional art museum and arts education center housed in a historic 1913 former school. It is the only facility of its kind and Virginia’s only nationally accredited museum west of Roanoke. An average of nine exhibitions are mounted each year, showcasing art of the region and of the world. Programming includes artist talks, lectures, workshops, and other special events. Two additional galleries include the Student Gallery, which displays works from area schools and colleges, and the Panoramic Gallery that features self-curated shows by local artists. These two galleries offer up to 24 additional exhibits a year. An extensive arts education program serves school and public audiences both within and outside of the facility. The Museum also features artist studios, reference library, research archives, and an outdoor sculpture garden.

Mission: The William King Museum of Art is a visual arts institution and a cultural cornerstone of our Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee region. The museum’s mission is to present its constituents and visitors with the following artistic experiences: · Bring rotating exhibits of works of art from around the nation and the world to our diverse audience · Showcase and preserve our cultural heritage · Use art as a tool to educate both children and adults and enrich lives · Serve as a museum showcase for our regional artists

How about something fun to help us get over this #humpday? Grab a pencil ✏️ (or pen or marker or crayon or tablet- whatever you have handy!) and a scrap of paper.

Give yourself five minutes and create a quick sketch of this still life carefully crafted by your friendly neighborhood museum professionals!

If you’d like, share a pic of your sketch in the comments!

Self-care comes in many different forms. Taking a few minutes to do something creative, even if it’s just for you, is a great way to relax and find renewed energy to conquer the rest of the day!

One of the gallery games we play with students and families is the Bucket Game. The rules are simple:

👉 Participants choose a piece of art to focus on.

👉 Everyone pulls an object at random out of a bucket.

👉 For a set period of time (30 seconds to a minute) everyone looks closely at their chosen artwork and thinks about how the object they chose relates to the work. There are no right or wrong answers, there is no limit on the number of creative ways to relate the object to the piece.

✅ This is a great way to encourage young museum goers to look closely and think more deeply about a piece of art.

Let’s play! Take a look at this object we drew out of the bucket and think about how it relates to “Fragments 1 & 2” by Patricia Mink.

Let us know what you come up with in the comments!

And don’t forget to join us Saturday morning for our Learning Families Gallery Game Day when we’ll be playing the bucket game and more!

Art Speaks will air it's final new episode today at 1 PM on 90.7 WEHC. For almost a decade, it has been the public voice of WKMA and we've so enjoyed the chance it's given us to speak directly to you.

Be sure to tune in today at 1 PM to help us say goodbye.

On May 20, 2010, the very first episode of Art Speaks aired on 90.7 WEHC. Today, January 9, 2020 at 1 p.m., we will air our final new episode of the show. We think it's a good one!

For nearly a decade, Art Speaks has (we hope) given you a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the depth and breadth of our amazing artistic community. We have loved speaking with so many unique and creative people on our show and sharing those conversations with all of you.

We could not be more grateful for the partnership and support of 90.7 WEHC from that first episode to this, our last. Every day spent in their studios recording was a joy for us.

Thank you so much for listening to Art Speaks. It has been a privilege to share this time with you.

With gratitude,

Your Hosts, past and present

Here are just a few images of the more than 70 exhibitions that have come to WKMA over the last decade.

Since 2010, our galleries have hosted art from Africa, Australia, India, and countries all across Europe as well as work by some of the best artists in our region.

We've partnered with a number of institutions including the Chrysler Museum of Art, the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, the Lauren Rogers Museum, the Taubman Museum of Art, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts as well as private collectors to bring exhibitions of the highest caliber to the mountains of Appalachia.

We can't wait to bring you more of the same in the decade to come.

What are some of your favorite exhibits you've seen in our galleries over the last ten years?

12/23/2019

WKMA will be closed Tuesday (12/24) and Wednesday (12/25). We hope everyone has a wonderful holiday!

One person exhibition in the Panoramic Gallery! Pretty cool. the opening is next week. 😊
Today, I had the opportunity to visit the Museum's newest exhibit - The Great War: Printmakers of World War I. This was one of the best exhibits I have seen at William King in a long time; and I encourage everyone to come and enjoy it. However, the exhibit is not why I am commenting on your page! When I got back out to my car, it would not start. I had not left any lights on to drain the battery, but the car just would not start. It was pouring down rain ( thank you Hurricane Harvey!!) so I grabbed an umbrella and returned to the Museum. There your security guard came to find out why the front desk person had called him. I so regret that I didn't ask his name, but I couldn't have encountered a nicer person!! He ventured out into the rain to see what was wrong with my car, went back to get his own personal vehicle and jumper cables and then started my car. He told me where in Abingdon I could take my car to have the battery tested. He would not take any renumeration for his efforts or for coming out in the rain to help. I can't tell you how relieved I was to get my car started, and I was even more delighted to encounter such a friendly and capable gentleman! Please give him my thanks again! The Museum is lucky to have someone like him working so hard to care for its visitors!
Went to Appalachian Culture presentation at the Bristol Library last evening. PLEASE do more of these and showcase individual artist or craft. Callie, maybe you can do one on the significance of the horse in our culture? Thank you very much for bringing this to our library. It was very enjoyable and much appreciated.
