(77)

The William King Museum of Art is a non-profit regional art museum and arts education center housed in a historic 1913 former school. It is the only facility of its kind and Virginia’s only nationally accredited museum west of Roanoke. An average of nine exhibitions are mounted each year, showcasing art of the region and of the world. Programming includes artist talks, lectures, workshops, and other special events. Two additional galleries include the Student Gallery, which displays works from area schools and colleges, and the Panoramic Gallery that features self-curated shows by local artists. These two galleries offer up to 24 additional exhibits a year. An extensive arts education program serves school and public audiences both within and outside of the facility. The Museum also features artist studios, reference library, research archives, and an outdoor sculpture garden.

Mission: The William King Museum of Art is a visual arts institution and a cultural cornerstone of our Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee region. The museum’s mission is to present its constituents and visitors with the following artistic experiences: · Bring rotating exhibits of works of art from around the nation and the world to our diverse audience · Showcase and preserve our cultural heritage · Use art as a tool to educate both children and adults and enrich lives · Serve as a museum showcase for our regional artists

We had a great lunch and learn yesterday! Suzanne Stryk, whose solo exhibition, Notes on the State of Virginia, was featured in our contemporary gallery last year, returned to discuss process, tips, and tricks in assemblage art.

Rachel Caro, Outreach Coordinator of the Blue Ridge Discovery Center, attended Lunch and Learn yesterday and writes about Suzanne Stryk in the following blog post:
https://blueridgediscoverycenter.org/blueridgediscoverycenterblog/2019/6/19/nature-inspires-art-as-stryk-inspires-naturalists

Suzanne Stryk will be leading a nature art program at the Center's Mount Rogers Naturalist Rally in August.

Lunch and Learns are every 3rd Wednesday of the month and are free and open to the public. Please call, email, or message ahead to reserve your spot!

July will feature Heidi Rugg, puppet maker and textile artist. You can learn more about her here: http://barefootpuppets.com/about/meet-the-team/heidi-rugg/

August will feature Dawn Waters, a 2-D needle felt artist who describes her process as "painting with wool". You can see her amazing felt portraiture on her Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sheepishwork/

Do you know WKMA’s history?
.
.
.
William King Museum of Art is named after the entrepreneur and merchant of Irish descent, William King. After establishing himself in Washington County, VA he built a successful career in producing salt from Saltville, VA and transporting it along the Holston River to King’s Port or what is now @kingsportennessee . At the time of King’s death in 1808 his will included a gift of $10,000 or “lands to that amount” to the Abingdon Male Academy, on whose board he served. The Academy needed new quarters, and his legacy was used for this purpose, locating the Academy on the tract that is today the Museum’s property.
.
.
.
In 1824 the Abingdon Male Academy built their school building at the top of the Museum’s site, comprised of approximately 25 acres. By 1830, enrollment was over forty students. During the Civil War, troops were billeted in the school. The war took its toll on the building, and in 1872 a new brick school building was erected.
.
.
.
Today the building houses William King Museum of Art. The Museum is open seven days a week with FREE admission.
