A collection of photographs showing the use of boats to transport materials and supplies, as well as to evacuate sick and injured prisoners of war from labour camps along the river during the construction of the Burma–Thailand Railway.

Photos 1–3: These photographs show the transportation of atap, a palm-like material used for roofing.

Photo 4: A boat journey along the Khwae Noi River to transport supplies or take sick prisoners of war to hospitals at other camps.

ช่วงนี้ที่ศูนย์ประวัติศาสตร์ช่องเขาขาดมีฝนตกค่อนข้างบ่อย ขอแนะนำให้นักท่องเที่ยวสวมรองเท้าที่มั่นคง พกร่ม/เสื้อกันฝน และสเปรย์กันแมลง เพื่อการเดินเท้าที่ปลอดภัย

ทางศูนย์เปิดให้บริการตามปกติทุกวัน เวลา 09.00-16.00 น.

The Hellfire Pass Interpretive Centre has been experiencing frequent rainfall recently. Visitors are advised to wear sturdy, comfortable footwear and bring an umbrella or raincoat, as well as insect repellent, to ensure a safe and comfortable walk.

The Centre remains open as usual every day from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

🚫พื้นที่นิทรรศการอาจเข้าชมได้เฉพาะบางส่วน ในบางช่วงเวลาเท่านั้น
✅เส้นทางเดินเท้าไปช่องเขาขาด การเดินทางไกลจะยังเปิดตามปกติ

จึงขอเรียนให้นักท่องเที่ยวทราบเพื่อวางแผนการเข้าชมในช่วงวันดังกล่าว

The Hellfire Pass Interpretive Centre will be upgrading the audio-visual (AV) system within the exhibition galleries from 4–9 August 2026.
🚫 During this period, some exhibition areas may be closed or only accessible at certain times.
✅ The walking trail to Hellfire Pass and the longer walking route will remain open as usual.

Visitors are kindly advised to take this into account when planning their visit during these dates. We apologise for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding as we undertake these improvements to enhance the visitor experience.

ศูนย์ประวัติศาสตร์ช่องเขาขาดได้รับเกียรติในการต้อนรับ ฯพณฯ พาโบล คัง ว่าที่เอกอัครราชทูตออสเตรเลียประจำประเทศไทย เนื่องในโอกาสที่ท่านจะเข้ารับตำแหน่ง โดยท่านได้เข้าเยี่ยมชมศูนย์ประวัติศาสตร์ช่องเขาขาด และวางพวงมาลาเพื่อรำลึกถึงผู้เสียชีวิตจากการก่อสร้างทางรถไฟสายไทย–พม่า นอกจากนี้ ท่านยังได้พบปะและพูดคุยกับเจ้าหน้าที่ของศูนย์ฯ เพื่อสร้างความคุ้นเคยและรับทราบการดำเนินงานของศูนย์ฯ

The Hellfire Pass Interpretive Centre was honoured to welcome His Excellency Mr Pablo Kang, the Ambassador-designate of Australia to Thailand, on the occasion of his appointment. During his visit, His Excellency toured the Centre and laid a wreath in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the construction of the Burma–Thailand Railway. He also took the opportunity to meet and engage with the Centre’s staff, gaining a better understanding of their work and the Centre’s ongoing operations

ศูนย์ประวัติศาสตร์ช่องเขาขาด จะเปิดทำการทุกวันในช่วงวันหยุดยาวของเดือนกรกฎาคม นักท่องเที่ยวสามารถเข้าชมได้ตั้งแต่เวลา 09.00-16.00 น.

สำหรับผู้ที่สนใจเดินเส้นทางไกล (2.6 กม.หรือประมาณ 5 กม. สำหรับไป-กลับ) ขอแนะนำให้ท่านเดินทางมาในช่วงเช้า เพื่อให้มีเวลาเพียงพอในการเข้าชม

ทางศูนย์ฯขอให้ท่านเดินทางอย่างปลอดภัยในช่วงวันหยุดยาว

The Centre will remain open every day throughout the July, including public holidays. Visitors are welcome to the Centre daily from 9.00 am- 4.00 pm.

For those planning to walk the full trail (2.6 km one way, or approximately 5 km return), we recommend arriving in the morning to allow enough time to complete your visit at a comfortable pace.

Job Vacancy Announcement
The Hellfire Pass Interpretive Centre, operated by the Australian Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), is inviting applications for the position of Operations Manager / Deputy Manager (1 position).
This is a full-time, ongoing position at Locally Engaged Staff (LES) Level 5 (LE5). The successful applicant will be employed under a contract with the Australian Embassy, Thailand, and will be based at the Hellfire Pass Interpretive Centre in Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand.
Starting Salary: THB 81,374 per month
Application Period : 20 July 2026 – 10 August 2026

การทำคันดิน (Embankment) เป็นงานวิศวกรรมที่พบได้บ่อยตลอดเส้นทางรถไฟสายไทย-พม่า โดยคันดินจะสร้างขึ้นเพื่อยกระดับพื้น และช่วยรักษาระดับความลาดชันของทางรถไฟ เนื่องจากหัวจักรไอน้ำจะสามารถวิ่งขึ้น-ลงเนินที่มีความชันไม่มากเท่านั้น

การก่อสร้างคันดินต้องใช้แรงงานจำนวนมากในการขนดิน-หินด้วยตระกร้าหรือผ้ากระสอบหามไม้ไผ่ และงานจะอันตรายมากขึ้นเมื่อคันดินมีความสูงขึ้นเรื่อยๆ โดยเฉพาะในช่วงหน้าฝนที่คันดินจะลื่น การเดินขึ้น-ลงและขนวัสดุหนักจึงเป็นงานยากสำหรับแรงงานที่หมดเรี่ยวแรง

ในภาพสี คือ ภาพคันดินสูง 7 เมตรบริเวณใกล้กับช่องตัดหินตก หรือประมาณ 2 กม.จากจุดเริ่มต้นเส้นทางเดินเท้า

Embankments were one of the most common engineering features constructed along the Burma–Thailand Railway. They were built to raise the level of the ground and maintain a gentle gradient, as steam locomotives could only travel safely on relatively shallow inclines.

Constructing an embankment required enormous amounts of manual labour. Soil and rocks were carried in baskets or sacks suspended from bamboo poles, with workers making countless trips to build up the earthworks.

As the embankments grew higher, the work became increasingly dangerous. During the wet season, the muddy slopes became slippery, making it even more difficult for exhausted labourers to climb the embankment while carrying heavy loads.

The colour photograph shows a 7-metre-high embankment located near Compressor Cutting, approximately 2 kilometres from the start of the Hellfire Pass walking trail.

เพื่อความปลอดภัย โปรดทราบว่าศูนย์ประวัติศาสตร์ช่องเขาขาดจะดำเนินการเคลียร์หินที่สุ่มเสี่ยงจะร่วงหล่นในเส้นทางเดินเท้า รวมถึงบริเวณช่องเขาขาด ระหว่างวันที่ 15-17 กรกฎาคม 2569
โดยจะส่งผลกระทบต่อการเข้าชมดังนี้
- การเดินชมผ่านช่องเขาขาด (โดยเฉพาะวันที่ 15 ก.ค.)
- บันไดทางลงไปเส้นทางเดินเท้า
-การใช้รถกอล์ฟ
-การเดินทางไกล 2.6 กม.

จึงขอแจ้งให้นักท่องเที่ยวทราบล่วงหน้า และขอแนะนำให้วางแผนการเดินทางเพื่อหลีกเลี่ยงการดำเนินการดังกล่าว ทางศูนย์ฯต้องขออภัยทุกท่านในความไม่สะดวก 🙏

For the safety of all visitors, please be advised that the Hellfire Pass Interpretive Centre will be carrying out rock scaling work to remove loose rocks that pose a potential falling hazard along the walking trail, including the Hellfire Pass area, from 15–17 July 2026.

The following areas and services will be affected during this period:
• Access through Hellfire Pass (Konyu Cutting), particularly on 15 July
• The staircase leading down to the walking trail
• Golf buggy service
• The 2.6 km walking trail

We would like to advise visitors in advance and recommend planning your visit accordingly. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding. 🙏

ศูนย์ประวัติศาสตร์ช่องเขาขาดมีความยินดีที่ได้ต้อนรับคณะทหารออสเตรเลียที่เดินทางมาฝึกซ้อมรบภายใต้รหัส Chapel Gold กับทางกองทัพไทย โดยทางคณะได้เข้าทัศนศึกษาในจังหวัดกาญจนบุรี พร้อมเข้าชมช่องเขาขาดและสถานที่ทางประวัติศาสตร์อื่นๆ

ในโอกาสนี้ได้คณะได้ร่วมทำกิจกรรมบำเพ็ญประโยชน์ โดยการร่วมซ่อมทางเดินปูนเก่าที่มีสภาพชำรุด ซึ่งเป็นการช่วยปรับปรุงทัศนียภาพและความปลอดภัยของนักท่องเที่ยว จึงขอขอบคุณทางคณะมา ณ โอกาสนี้

The Centre was pleased to welcome a group of Australian Army personnel participating in Exercise Chapel Gold, a joint military training exercise with the Royal Thai Army. During their visit to Kanchanaburi Province, the group toured Hellfire Pass and several other local historical sites.

As part of their visit, the soldiers also took part in a community service activity by helping repair a section of the old concrete walkway that had deteriorated over time. Their contribution has helped improve both the appearance of the site and the safety of visitors.

We sincerely thank the group for their generosity and support in helping preserve this important place of remembrance.
