Illustrations and creations of Emma Lopes, artist based in Lisbon, Portugal. Spending time in wild places is her favourite pastime and mother nature is her muse. A core belief which filters into every aspect of her work is that all life is interconnected. Working in watercolour, gouache, collage, and sometimes even marine debris, she uses detail, pattern and colour to focus our attention on the vi

"Ocean of the Future" our last prompt of and this one is dedicated to both Healthy Ocean Coalition and CLEAN MIAMI BEACH both organizations embody the sentiment of this quote by Margaret Mead.
It's one I keep coming back to and when I think about the future and I see the incredible work of Healthy Ocean Coalition and Clean Miami Beach do, this is the people power that gives me hope 🙌🌊💙🌊. It's a reminder that together we have the power to affect great change around us 🌍💙🩵. We may not be the rulers of the world but individually we have agency, and in community with a shared vision I truly believe we can create a better world. Maybe there is something you can build in your local community to advocate for planet ocean? 💙🌊🩵

It's the reason I started this challenge with Shelley Hanmo ✂️ Paper Artist in the first place, so I'm happy the thought we leave you with for 2026!

Thank you to the ARTivism for our blue planet community for coming together this year to use your voice and your creativity for the ocean it has been another year of beautiful and inspiring artwork and I have learned something new every day! 🙌🌊🙌

As yesterday was World Giraffe Day here's a little behind the scenes on the painting process for the giraffe in the artwork for
Each element was hand-painted in watercolour and gouache, then scanned "cleaned-up" the assembled on to the final composition.

Happy World Giraffe Day! 🦒🦒🦒
Giraffe populations have fallen about 40% in the last 30 years, driven by Habitat loss, poaching & tension between humans & wildlife.
Giraffes are very important for the health of the savannah ecosystems they inhabit. Their browsing helps seed dispersal & new shoot production.

Currently measures like
Translocation of giraffes to protected areas have shown some success, as well as anti-poaching & illegal trade enforcement.

Taking regular flower breaks whilst I work 🌺🪻🌻
I love my work but it does involve a lot of close up detailing and it's easier to do inside out of the sun (or wind). So it's still important to get up, walk around, move a little and smell the flowers.
The first sketch is from a visit to my family in North Wales, it's not my garden but I've planted lots of similar colours to attract pollinators 🐝🦋

Mysteries of the Ocean 🪸🌊🦑💙🐙 here is the deep sea for prompt 3 of the challenge
Well of course, we still have so much to learn about by far the largest habitat on the planet so I had to post this painting I completed last year (but started in 2023 I believe!)

Thinking about the vastness of the deep sea is in itself mind-blowing. Only the other day I was listening to a New Scientist podcast about a huge deep sea graveyard of whale carcasses 7000m deep in the Indian ocean "The researchers estimated there were up to 760 individual whales per square kilometre, including both ancient and recent carcasses, constituting what they have called a “whale necropolis” and a “deep-sea fossil megasite”.

Many of the whales discovered were deep-diving beaked whales and including many fossils of some whales previously unknown to science. Then of course this whale graveyard was a feeding ground for deep sea life that in turn includes many species new to science.

For "Ocean Superheroes" it had to be oysters 🦪 as their importance Is often wildly underestimated. They are truly a keystone species. Creating reefs that provide a habitat for marine life. They filter the water providing cleaner, clearer water for their marine neighbours. Also making it easier for other viral species such as seagrass to thrive. Not to mention that oyster reefs can protect our coastlines from erosion.

You are probably far more familiar with the Pacific oyster because it is so widely cultivated. Here in Europe we have lost huge swathes of our native oyster population, who really are ocean superstars. Restoration projects can take time but is a vital component of ocean health policy.

Happy World Ocean Day! 💙🌊💙 Symbiosis is our theme of the day in There are if course, those well-known symbiotic relationships of nature but relationships of interdependency are reflected at various different scales throughout the web of life so I wanted to acknowledge that too! Thank you to everyone who has joined this challenge to celebrate the ocean with us though creativity! 🩵🌊💙

1st June is World Reef Awareness Day! 🪸🩵🐠
A reminder and a call to action about one of our planet's most precious ecosystems. They are absolutely vital for healthy oceans & a healthy planet as at least 25% of marine life depends on them. They are under great threat, as a warming ocean means that coral bleaching & die off is increasing year on year. We ultimately need to stop burning fossil fuels AND restore nature so that our planet can recalibrate. However, stopping ocean pollution and overfishing can increase the coral reefs resiliencea and mean that reefs survive. There are also so many wonderful coral restoration organisations to check out and support!
