5 things I wish I’d known before becoming an artist:

1. Being talented is wildly overrated. Consistency wins almost every time.

2. Most artists aren’t held back by their art. They’re held back by waiting for permission.

3. The art world is full of rules that somebody just made up.

4. Making art and selling art are two completely different skills.

5. The feeling that you’re “not ready yet” never really goes away. You just learn to create anyway.

The art world likes to pretend it rewards the best artists.

I’m not sure that’s true.

The best artist doesn’t always get seen.

The artist who posts consistently gets seen.
The artist who understands attention gets seen.
The artist who knows how to tell a story gets seen.
The artist who is comfortable promoting themselves gets seen.

Meanwhile, somewhere, there is an extraordinary artist creating work that could stop you in your tracks.

And hardly anyone knows they exist.

Talent matters.

But visibility matters too.

Perhaps that’s one of the hardest truths for artists to accept.

Because we’d like to believe that if the work is good enough, it will find its way into the world.

Sometimes it does.

Sometimes it doesn’t.

Listen to this crazy story…

About 1 year ago I was contacted by email by an art gallery in Lisbon. To w owner wrote that he loves my work and would like to visit my studio (!!) and possibly purchase some of my paintings.

So far, crazy enough for me to click ‘send to Spam’.

But I didn’t. I researched, called him and we arranged to meet in my studio.

He came and chose 7 original paintings he adored - ready to buy them all.

All 7 pieces were exhibited in the gallery and I just found out that only 2 are left 🥹.

This is THE ‘wet dream’ any artist probably has at some point in their career.

When self doubt sneaks in, I remind myself of this story. Not to brag, but to remember that patience and persistence are key to being an artist. I have to keep doing what I love for me. The rest will follow.

I no longer believe the idea that people find themselves.

Because that implies we’re meant to arrive somewhere and stay there. As if there’s a destination.

But life is a continuous becoming. We lose, remake and evolve our self all the time.

This one is for anyone who can’t imagine life without music… 😯

While painting this piece, I realised that sometimes I negotiate with darkness. I think many of us do in many ways.

Sometimes through conversations.
Sometimes through art.
And sometimes through a song someone we love sends us at exactly the right moment.

Before them, it’s just music.

After them, it becomes a place you can return to. A reminder of who you were, what you felt, what you hoped for. Even years later, a few familiar notes can pull an entire chapter of your life back into the room.

The song stays the same.

But every time you hear it, you’re negotiating with a different version of yourself.

That’s what this painting feels like to me.

Not darkness as something to defeat, but something to sit with. To revisit. To make peace with. To find meaning inside.

Because some things never sound the same again once they’ve been touched by love… ❤️❤️

Some people are not going to like this but I’ll say it anyway.

I believe that most people don’t dislike abstract art, they’re just uncomfortable with how it makes them feel.

There’s a quiet violence in how we’re taught to approach art. As if it has to be decoded before it’s allowed to move you.

But real art doesn’t ask for understanding first. It asks for honesty. It bypasses language. It finds the places you’ve refrained entering and unsettles them.

And I think that’s why people look away before they look longer. Not because it’s confusing… but because it’s close.

Too close to something they haven’t named yet.

My art isn’t here to be solved.
It’s here to be felt - even when it’s inconvenient.

Maybe especially then.
