Reclamation: A Journey Through the Work of Shargeel Zafar. The opening took place on Saturday, 29th August, 2026.

Informed by his background in Humanistic Counselling, Shargeel Zafar’s practice explores the raw, camouflaged territory of human emotion. By treating mark-making as an intuitive process of unearthing, he brings to light the emotional landscapes that exist beneath our everyday defences.

The exhibition continues till 26th September, with gallery timings 11 am to 7 pm, Monday through Saturday.

VM Art Gallery is the proud host to VMCTA Graduation Exhibition 2026. This exhibition features works of the fourth graduating batch of VM Center for Traditional Arts’s diploma programme, curated by Alefiya Abbas Ali and Shahzad Zar. Participating artists include Noureen Chagani, Rafia Shahzad, Sarrah Luvai Zoomkawala, Sidra Tul Muntaha, and Syed Maryam Zameer Meer. The exhibition will open on Saturday 29th August 2026 at 5pm and continue till 12th September 2026, Monday to Saturday, 11am to 7pm.

Established by a proud partnership with The King’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts, London, VM Center for Traditional Arts is a full-time, one-year programme that aims to help revive Pakistan’s artistic skills and techniques, and to revitalize the relevance of traditional arts in contemporary Pakistan.

The diploma programme seeks to draw out the skills of both aspiring young artists and practicing professionals who are aiming to pursue or enhance a career in the field of art. VMCTA seeks to nurture within its students an understanding of the intrinsic, sacred value of the traditional arts.

The culmination of the diploma year is a project of the student’s own design that integrates geometry, design, and craftsmanship. This year the final project work includes marquetry, ceramics, textiles, geometry, biomorphic designs, manuscript illumination paintings and gesso paintings.

VM Art Gallery is pleased to present Reclamation, a solo exhibition by Shargeel Zafar. The exhibition will open on Saturday, August 29, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and will continue until Saturday, September 26, 2026, with gallery hours from 11 am to 7 pm, Monday to Saturday.

Informed by his background in Humanistic Counselling, Shargeel Zafar’s practice explores the raw, camouflaged territory of human emotion. By treating mark-making as an intuitive process of unearthing, he brings to light the emotional landscapes that exist beneath our everyday defences.

Releasing calculated control, Zafar’s process relies on spontaneity and a personal, coded visual language. The non-representational marks in his works emerge unfiltered in real time, functioning as a physical conduit to what lies within, bypassing the conscious censorship of vulnerability and emotional weight.

The resulting surfaces that come from visceral gesture, kinetic energy, and layered texture are not narrative illustrations; rather, they are archives of emotion and energy, capturing the moment a suppressed emotion breaks through the mask and reclaims its true form.

About the Artist:
Shargeel Zafar (b. 1981, Lahore, Pakistan) is a contemporary visual artist whose practice explores the masked, suppressed, and camouflaged dimensions of human emotion. An alumnus of the National College of Arts (NCA), Lahore (2002), Zafar’s conceptual framework is built upon a dual foundation: a multi-decade studio practice alongside training in Humanistic Counselling and psychodynamics. Zafar currently lives and works in Lahore, Pakistan.
