UP Zoological Society UPZS is a duly-recognized academic, socio-civic, & environmental org based in UPD-IB.

The UP Zoological Society is a university-recognized academic, socio-civic, and environmental organization composed of students from the Institute of Biology and other colleges in the university. Established in 1952, UPZS has since strived to be the best in life through yearly events and projects spanning its mission-vision. This includes activities such as tutorial sessions, seminars, educational discussions, quiz bees, medical missions, outreach programs, donation drives, and clean-up drives. The organization also plays an active role in various campaigns and protests for the preservation of the environment and on various social issues. UPZS serves to promote unity, service and environmental awareness to the Filipino people.

We're back, travellers!

Do you believe in fire-breathing legends? Well, our reality can be just as magnificent and awe-inspiring! Join UP Zoological Society and the rest of our adventuring party in this season's nature walk, fashioned to be a h**ping, as we seek for amphibians and reptiles lurking among the trees and waters of the National Science Complex. This is open to all enthusiasts, no, especially beginners!

Our adventure will start in the Institute of Biology Vertebrate Museum, taking a peek at preserved fearsome and charismatic real-life 'dragon' species, among other amphibians and reptiles. Then, in our h**p walk, adventurers have the opportunity to temporarily catch, collect, and observe live specimens and observe them in the lab, before re-releasing them back into their homes! And do not fret, for our guide for this quest is both a sage in wisdom and a druid in experience, Sir Paolo Miguel Kim!

Important equipment such as headlamps, flashlights, and gloves are to be provided, but feel free to bring your personal gear! Other specifics about your proper attire, as an adventurer's armor set should be, are to be detailed once you sign up!

Perspectives overlap: environmental justice is human justice.

As we continue purporting the innate or inherent value in all forms of life, pragmatism leads us to a resolve. It is imperative that we see detriment towards our wildlife and the environment are the same threates that mishandle and abuse our natural resources, and almost freely chooses whose traditions, communities, incomes, work, homes, and whole lives can be disregarded in the name of profit in the guise of progress. Progress for some is not progress for all.

Wildlife trade starts even before the hunt.

With greater context, the issue somewhat becomes two-fold. Animal welfare and conservatism are intersect with class disparity. Despite clandestiness and prohibition, the affluent upper class are able to generate consumer demand for luxury in these poached animals, thus creating high-volume trafficking networks that are able to systematically employ the low- and middle-income laborers amid unemployment crises in 'developing' and poverty-striken contries and regions. It so happens that these localities overlap with megadiverse hotspots where they see fit to be product sources. More than the animal, the poor are also exploited.

Though it may be critiquable that this spotlights a human-centered aspect of the issue, where we champion the inherent value of all life as enough reason for conservation and ethics, it is an aspect we cannot ignore. Moreover, this does not deem the actions of those who participate in the trade excusable. Rather, it offers explanation and calls for a more intersectional approach both for civilians and policy makers. The goal is the same: animal welfare and conservation with sustainable development.

This year’s World Animal Day was a few days ago, but what did the day entail?

The theme for World Animal Day 2026, coordinated annually by the Naturewatch Foundation, has been designated “see the world through their eyes,” inspired to challenge prevailing anthropocentric ideology and ways of life, as human activity has been unequivocally changed the planet and the life it houses. Here, we highlight a direct more tangible consequences of anthropogenic expansion in pursuit of industrial and economic progress. Habitat loss and fragmentation is among the prevailing and recurring antecedents to species endangerment and extinction. The Philippine Crocodile, designated as critically endangered in the IUCN Red List, is only one of the species, endemic or otherwise, in our megadiverse home we share, that continue to see the threat of extinction. In the highlighting of these charismatic species, we fear disremembering the inherent value of life of all living beings, as is still unfortunately contested among conversations in wildlife conservation.

Greetings! It is with deep regret that we announce that the upcoming event, Dragon Seeking: H**p Nature Walk & Museum Visit, shall be postponed indefinitely. Due to some oversights on our part, we have encountered some logistical problems, specifically seeing as Monday, the 28th of September, had been declared a non-working holiday to observe the National Family Week and Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga Day. We have also emailed the registered participant further details, and what they can do with their acquired slots; so please do check your inboxes.

Again, we sincerely and humbly apologize for this oversight, and for your inconvenience. We are also very thankful for the enthusiasm and love you have shown this event! Please do stick
