One of the works of Buhinon artist Cesar Gumba is set to grace the cover of Breve Noticia acerca del origen, religión, creencias y supersticiones de los antiguos indios del Bícol by Fray José Castaño, OFM, with an introduction and English translation by Kurt S. Zepeda.
This forthcoming publication is part of Savage Mind Bookshop and Publishing House’s continuing commitment to bringing historical Bikoliana back into circulation—not merely as documents of the past, but as living texts that invite new readings, questions, and encounters.
In this contemporary rendition, we also seek to foreground the works of our local artists, whose creative practices speak to, converse with, and deepen our connection to the histories and cultural memory of Bikol. By bringing together a historical text and the work of a contemporary Bikolnon artist, we hope to create another meeting place between the archive and the imagination, between what has been recorded and what continues to be reinterpreted. This is Savage Mind: keeping our histories in circulation, and allowing them to find new life through the arts.
