This October, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines joins the nation in celebrating Museums and Galleries Month (MGM) 2026 with the theme, “Bridging Divides: Preserving the Present for Tomorrow.”
Observed every October pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 798, s. 1991, MGM celebrates the important role of museums and galleries in nurturing national consciousness, strengthening our connection with our cultural heritage, and carrying the stories of our communities forward. More than repositories of objects from the past, museums are living spaces for learning, dialogue, and discovery.
For the NHCP, these spaces extend across the country through our shrines, museums, and historical landmarks. They preserve the places where history happened, safeguard objects and memories that help tell our national story, and bring Filipinos closer to the lives, struggles, ideas, and communities that shaped our nation. This year’s theme reminds us that history and heritage can help bridge distances between generations, communities, and different experiences.
Museums become meaningful when the histories they preserve are shared, discussed, questioned, and made accessible to the people whose stories they tell. Throughout October, we celebrate the people and communities who keep these places alive and the visitors who continue to discover something new within them.
Here’s to a month of exploring, remembering, and making history come alive!

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), in partnership with the Municipal Government of Lubao, commemorated the 116th birth anniversary of President Diosdado Macapagal on 28 September 2026 at the Museo at Aklatan ni Diosdado Macapagal in Lubao, Pampanga.

Born in Lubao on 28 September 1910, Macapagal served as the ninth President of the Philippines from 1961 to 1965. His administration is remembered for significant economic and agrarian reforms and for moving the official celebration of Philippine Independence Day from 4 July to 12 June, recognizing the proclamation of independence in 1898.

The commemorative program began with a Thanksgiving Mass and was followed by the traditional floral offering. Representatives from the Office of the President, the Macapagal family, the Provincial Government of Pampanga, the Municipal Government of Lubao, the Department of Education, and the NHCP joined the ceremony.

The NHCP was represented by Deputy Executive Director for Administration Rosario V. Sapitan, who delivered the agency’s message of tribute. Pampanga Governor Lilia G. Pineda, Lubao Mayor Esmeralda G. Pineda, former President and Pampanga 2nd District Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, and Councilor Cielo Salgado-Macapagal were among the officials and representatives participating in the commemoration.

The annual observance honors the life, public service, and contributions of President Diosdado Macapagal to the Philippine nation.

Diosdado Macapagal was known for his Malayan vision of regional unity, advocating for stronger cooperation and solidarity among Southeast Asian nations. Inspired by Dr. Jose Rizal’s aspiration for a strong regional community in which Malayan nations could rely on one another’s strengths in economy, politics, and trade, Macapagal pursued initiatives that reflected this vision of regional treaty. When the Maphilindo (Malaysia, Philippines, and Indonesia) concept was proposed, it faced scrutiny and opposition from world powers seeking to influence the emerging regional alliance. This demonstrated the potential significance of Maphilindo as a force for regional cooperation amid the growing challenges of globalization and the threat of new forms of colonialism.

With President Macapagal’s extensive experience in the Department of Foreign Affairs prior to his presidency, the Philippines entered an era of active and assertive diplomacy. His administration strengthened the country’s engagement in international affairs, pursued an independent foreign policy, and renewed attention to long-standing territorial and regional concerns, including the Philippines’ claim to Sabah.

In line with the 116th Birth Anniversary of President Diosdado Macapagal, the Museo at Aklatan ni Diosdado Macapagal will commemorate his life, accomplishments, and contributions to Philippine diplomacy on 28 September 2026 at 7:00 AM at the NHCP Museo at Aklatan ni Diosdado Macapagal The event seeks to honor the life and service of the former President, particularly his contributions to the arena of international diplomacy, and to highlight the enduring legacy he left for present and future generations
