🌋 Before Negros had a name, it had a legend.

Long before maps, before towns, before the word "Negros" was even spoken — our ancestors had their own way of explaining how it all began.

According to Visayan tradition, the very first man and woman sprang from a single node of a split bamboo stalk, pecked open by a bird. Their names were Kang and Laon.

Look closely at our island's most iconic landmark, and you'll see them still — facing one another, forever, in the shape of a mountain. That mountain is Kanlaon Volcano.

It's one of the oldest stories Negrenses have ever told about themselves — and it's just the beginning of everything The Negros Museum has to share about our island's past.

Across the Philippines, many people follow the Oro, Plata, Mata tradition—a long-standing architectural superstition. As you climb the stairs, each step is counted in a repeating sequence: Oro (wealth), Plata (stability and prosperity), and Mata (death or misfortune).

Many believe it is good luck for a staircase to end on Oro or Plata, rather than Mata.
