Perspektivet Museum A place where present and past, photography, art and knowledge meet.

Her viser vi skiftende utstillinger.
Cora Sandel bodde her

🇬🇧
A visit to Perspektivet Museum offers stories from Tromsø, but also other parts of the world. The idea is to provide knowledge and curiosity about what it means to be a person with a northern vantagepoint. You will encounter historical objects, traces of the present day, photography and varied forms of artistic expression. You’ll find us at Storgata 95, in one of the city’s most beautiful old wooden buildings. Here we show changing exhibitions. In our exhibitions you will encounter both knowledge and art. You can learn something new, but also wonder about your own life and the lives of others. Stories from the Building
Right now you will find two exhibitions that begin with the story of the building. It was build as the home of the Mack family in 1838, and has later had many uses, amongst other things as Folkets Hus – a meeting place for workers from 1911-2001. Cora Sandel lived here
Sara Fabricius lived in an apartment in the building in her youth. She later became one of Norway’s greatest writers of the 20th century under the name Cora Sandel. Cora Sandel/Sara Fabricius lived a long life in Tromsø, France and Sweden, as a painter, writer, and private person. In our exhibitions on the first and second floor, different times, places and facts are woven together. Focus on photography
At Perspektivet Museum we consider photography to be a valuable medium. On the ground floor you can often see a photography exhibition. Many are from northern areas, but we also show relevant exhibitions from other parts of the world. In order to get perspectives on the north, we believe that we also need perspectives from elsewhere.

Panel: Indigenius and Local Voices in Contemporary Art

Saturday October 31st 2026
At 13.10 – 14.00
Free Entrance

This conversation brings together artists and writers whose work is deeply connected to northern landscapes, local communities and Indigenous perspectives.

Through literature, visual art and interdisciplinary practices, the speakers explore how questions of language, belonging, territory, memory and cultural representation continue to shape contemporary artistic expression. Drawing on their own creative practices and lived experiences, the panel reflects on the importance of local and Indigenous knowledge in an increasingly globalised world.

How can art preserve and revitalise languages, traditions and ways of knowing? What role do artists play in challenging dominant narratives and creating space for perspectives that have historically been overlooked or marginalised?

The discussion will also examine the relationship between place and identity, and how contemporary artists negotiate tradition, innovation and cultural responsibility.

By sharing personal stories and artistic approaches, the speakers will highlight how art can foster dialogue, strengthen cultural resilience and inspire new ways of understanding the North – not as a periphery, but as a place of creativity, knowledge and international relevance.

Moderator: Jonathan Crossen
Speakers: Sigbjørn Skåden, Kjersti Anfinnsen, Kirsti Lervoll
