Ludolf de Jongh (Rotterdam, 1616–1679) – Portrait of a Woman
A refined portrait by Ludolf de Jongh, one of the distinguished painters of the Dutch Golden Age.
Born in Overschie near Rotterdam, De Jongh trained with leading masters including Cornelis Saftleven, Anthonie Palamedesz and Jan van Bijlert, and spent several years in France before returning to Rotterdam, where he established a successful career as a portrait and genre painter.
His elegant portraits are distinguished by their sophisticated handling of light, delicate rendering of fabrics and jewellery, and the quiet psychological presence of the sitter. De Jongh’s artistic development was highly influential in Rotterdam, most notably on the young Pieter de H***h.
