It all began when I was very young with an exploration of fashion magazines, from which I crafted collages to construct my own universe, my sanctuary. The fashion magazines took me into another world, a world with style, interior, art, seduction and sensuality. The super models from the nineties have also inspired me.

These magazines acted as my enchanted books, their pages becoming my canvas. I tore, pasted, and forged my own world using collages and photography as the building blocks of my dream landscape. It’s a landscape saturated with emotions and sentiments, a realm where I could articulate myself without the necessity of words...

Piet Mondriaan Paintings

The collection this painting belongs to is called “Flowing”. The title reflects a shift in my work. When I graduated, I created a series called “The After Party”: large, expressive paintings (1 x 1 meter), built up with heavy texture and painted in a raw, almost explosive way. The energy really bursts off the canvas, but within a monochrome palette of black and greys. For me, it captures the atmosphere of an afterparty — darker, more raw, with a slightly techno-like feel — almost as a counterpart to a colourful “party”.

This new series is the opposite: the colour is literally on. I work with bright, neon-like colours and even use a neon frame.

This shift happened when I was able to step away for a while. I spent five weeks in Ibiza, where I had the space to fully focus on painting again. In my daily life, I also work as an art teacher at a secondary school that collaborates with the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Being in Ibiza allowed me to reconnect with being purely an artist.

That’s where this series was born. I felt full of energy, almost reborn. And that feeling is still very present in the work. When I look at these paintings, they give me warmth and really switch something on — and fortunately, many others experience that too. People often respond very enthusiastically. Someone even once thought there was an actual light inside one of the paintings, while it’s all created through colour.

CHRIS TAP | SCULPTURES

Chris Tap was born in 1973 in Amsterdam. Chris Tap is an artist with a passion for the visual arts.

Before becoming a full-time sculptor, he studied economics and cultural anthropology.

He is the second generation of sculptors in his family. His father Wim Tap is a well-known artist in the Netherlands and taught him the tricks of making sculptures.

Chris Tap is fascinated by cats. He admires the power, flexibility and elegance with which they move.

The artist studies living models of cats, to record the shape and every detail of the animal. He spends a lot of time in Artis, for example, to study various animals there. Chris is known for his very realistic sculptures in both marble (marble composite) and bronze.

The artist also regularly works for charities. For example, he designed an image for “The Black Jaguar Foundation”. He also designed a life-sized orange lion for the Spieren voor Spieren Foundation, which was signed by the Dutch national team and auctioned. His works can also be seen at various events, exclusive residences and business affairs.

Chris Tap’s work is part of various national and international art collections.
