Join us at Frank Taal Galerie for a morning of live classical guitar by Ruud Robbe, surrounded by Morphogenesis, the duo exhibition by Ria W**k & Wolfgang Ganter. Enjoy coffee and croissants while exploring the exhibition with the Frank Taal team.
The event takes inspiration from Wolfgang Ganter’s The Glorification of the Virgin, Geertgen tot Sint Jans, 2018–22, part of his WORKS IN PROGRESS series and currently on view in the gallery.
For his WORKS IN PROGRESS series, Ganter reproduces historical masterpieces on photographic film and exposes them to bacteria, yeast and fungi. The organic growth gradually alters the photographic emulsion, transforming the original image and revealing new colours, textures and forms. Decay becomes a process of renewal, bringing works from art history into a new contemporary context.
Ganter’s work revisits The Glorification of the Virgin by Geertgen tot Sint Jans, painted around 1490–1495 in the Northern Netherlands and held in the collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
The work’s musical dimension is particularly remarkable: the angels surrounding the Virgin and Child are depicted playing a wide range of instruments, offering a glimpse into the musical culture of the Northern Netherlands at the end of the 15th century.
Through live classical guitar, Ruud Robbe brings this musical dimension to life, creating a connection between Ganter’s contemporary reinterpretation and the historical artwork that inspired it.
