Juliette Minchin: REBURN

Join us for the closing celebration of REBURN, Juliette Minchin’s major solo exhibition, and the opening of a new cultural season at the gallery.

For this special occasion, we are delighted to welcome Hendrik Driessen, former director of Museum De Pont, who will be in conversation with Juliette Minchin about her practice and the ideas at the heart of REBURN.

The finissage will also be an opportunity to meet the artist and other artists represented by the gallery, enjoy summer drinks, and reconnect after the summer.

This is the last chance to see REBURN at the gallery before some of the works continue their journey to other venues, including Centre Pompidou-Metz.

We look forward to celebrating with you.

Recent deelde Marjan Teeuwen de bevlogen recensie van Janna Reinsma in De Correspondent.

'Na de komst van puintovenaar Marjan Teeuwen is geen gebouw meer hetzelfde.' Een titel die je met een glimlach achterlaat én nieuwsgierig maakt naar het werk van Marjan Teeuwen.

'Kunstenaar Marjan Teeuwen ontwikkelde een eenpersoonsgenre: ze stript panden die bijna gesloopt worden en tovert met het puin. Wat ze doet, is dit: ze verwijdert en verplaatst muren en plafonds, sloopt ondervloeren, brengt verborgen isolatiemateriaal naar de oppervlakte, bouwt wonderlijke stapels en creëert doorkijkjes die eerder onmogelijk waren.

Vervolgens komen de bezoekers – althans, de mazzelaars die er op tijd van weten. Want het resultaat van Teeuwens arbeid wordt weliswaar goed vastgelegd op foto’s, maar doorgaans is het maar tijdelijk te zien. Na Teeuwen volgt de sloopkogel.

‘After the arrival of demolition artist Marjan Teeuwen, no building is ever the same again.’ A headline that invites you to discover Marjan Teeuwen’s work up close.

Artist Marjan Teeuwen has developed a genre all of her own: she strips back buildings that are about to be demolished and works her magic with the rubble. This is what she does: she removes and relocates walls and ceilings, tears up subfloors, brings hidden insulation material to the surface, builds marvellous piles and creates vistas that were previously impossible.

Then come the visitors – or at least, the lucky ones who find out about it in time. Because although the result of Teeuwen’s work is well documented in photographs, it is usually only on display for a short time. After Teeuwen comes the wrecking ball.

This summer, in the ROOF-A newsletter, I recommended a visit to Château La Coste in the south of France. High on my own list was 'Nympheum, Peser Ses Larmes' by Juliette Minchin — and how special it was to see this impressive work for myself in the landscape.

At the highest point of the estate, opposite Tadao Ando’s chapel and Jean-Michel Othoniel’s cross, stands this monumental installation of stacked stones from a nearby quarry. Here, Minchin engages beautifully in a dialogue with the architecture, the landscape and the history of the site.
A nymphaeum originally referred to a sacred spring. The tin casts of ancient objects evoke the frozen water of a vanished spring — a fine example of how Minchin interweaves time, memory and material.

Her grand installation REBURN is currently on view throughout the ground floor of the gallery, featuring 42 works in wax, tin and burnt wood.

The festive closing event will take place on Saturday 29 August, in the presence of the artist, with an introduction by Hendrik Driessen.

Yesterday we travelled to De Panne, back to Johan Tahon’s roots, where his solo exhibition 'Wat de Zee Bewaart' is on view. It is an exhibition that is deeply personal and yet touches on something universal.

In a personal video, Tahon recounts the family history that unfolded in De Panne and Adinkerke. A history in which, in November 1943, the fishing vessel N141 De Zee vanished into the North Sea. The crew were never found. Johan Tahon’s great-grandfather, too, remains beneath the surface of the water for ever.

The exhibition brings together a special selection of sculptures, crafted from clay, plaster, bronze, salt and sand. Works that navigate the space between body and water, between presence and disappearance.

The walk to the dunes, where a bronze sculpture by Johan Tahon has been given a permanent home, also leaves a deep impression. The surroundings, the sea and the artwork come together there in an natural way.

'Wat de Zee Bewaart' is a beautiful ode to the silence beneath the waves — and to that which never quite disappears.

We are extremely proud to be presenting his work in the gallery and, shortly, at PAN Amsterdam as well.

Now on view | Hester Oerlemans ‘WINWIN’

WINWIN, the exhibition by Hester Oerlemans, winner of the prestigious Wilhelminaring, is on view at CODA Apeldoorn until 6 September. With her characteristic interplay of colour, material and form, Oerlemans presents a stimulating body of work in which painting and sculptural elements converge.

REBURN

Stand up. Fall down. Burn. Get back up. Stand tall. Start over.

The artist Juliette Minchin is exhibiting her first installation of burnt wooden slats, wrapped in wax-coated drapes - her signature technique - in dialogue with metal structures or stone, always paying homage to architecture.

Burnt wood symbolizes impermanence: used since the Paleolithic era to make wooden houses durable and protect them from insects, fire, and the elements. The layer of charring creates a protective, flaking outer layer.

From charcoal to candle, from darkness to light, two materials transformed by fire together. Wax is the bandage, wood the support: together, they form a single surface. Cathedral, wood fire, ruin, or structure? The slats delineate a space between birth and disappearance - an essential ambiguity in the artist’s work. It is a tribute to resilience in a fragile world that needs to be nurtured.

Het atelier van... Kim van Norren — De schilderijen van Kim van Norren beginnen altijd met woorden of muziek. Meestal zijn liedteksten de voedingsbodem voor haar kleurrijke abstracte doeken, maar in haar nieuwe werkt haalt ze ook inspiratie uit poëzie en sportcommentaar. In haar atelier in Kampen pakte ze na een moeilijke periode de draad weer op. Door woorden te schilderen creëerde Van Norren opnieuw ruimte voor zachtheid en verbondenheid. In haar nieuwe tentoonstelling ‘I Will Soften Every Edge’ bij ROOF-A onderzoekt Van Norren hoe liefde, kwetsbaarheid en zelfreflectie ons houvast kunnen bieden in moeilijke tijden.
