How can architecture resist exclusionary social norms?

SIDELINED explores how architecture can challenge exclusionary social norms, using sport as a mirror of social dynamics. Within the installation, visitors enter an alternative sports bar built on the principles of fluidity, connection, togetherness and experimentation.

Inside the bar, you can watch three team sports by Gabriel Fontana: Multiform, Anonymous Allyship and Fluid Field. With transformable uniforms, unknown teams and shapeshifting playing fields, these reimagined sports allow us to experience novel forms of connection, free from predefined roles and structures.

The installation features a Fluid Foosball Table: a reconfiguration of the beloved bar game, in which rigid binary structures are replaced by a fluid playing field with no fixed teams. A trophy cabinet displays trophies reflecting Fontana's team sports, with prizes awarded for various roles based on collaboration, improvisation and care.

After Summer School returns from 23 to 26 September, with four days of city classes scattered across Rotterdam. The programme comprises a series of classes, talks, workshops, and encounters that showcase and explore an inclusive and post-disciplinary approach to the city. Classes will take place in various locations across the city, including community centres, gardens, gyms, libraries, streets, public squares, bunkers and islands.

Kho Liang Ie Archival Pieces on Display at Stedelijk Museum

Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam is presenting a major exhibition showcasing the work of interior architect Kho Liang Ie (1927–1975). He is renowned for his furniture designs for the Artifort company, as well as for his large-scale interior designs for Schiphol Airport.

Nieuwe Instituut is lending a number of items from its collection to the exhibition, including the the wood-bound Schiphol book created by Kho Liang Ie in 1974 (as seen within the slides). It contains interior photographs, design studies, handwritten commentary and two design drawings. The book was intended as a presentation piece for UNESCO, and has been specifically restored for this exhibition.

Kho’s emphasis on functionality earned him the commission to design the interior of the new Schiphol Airport in 1962. This included everything from the seating areas and counters to the wall tiling, ashtrays and suspended ceilings, as well as the signage, which he designed with Benno Wissing of Total Design. The result demonstrates his integrated design vision, in which the architectural requirements of the building merge with the interior design and wayfinding.

Join us for the Multiform Tournament! In celebration of the exhibition SIDELINED: A Space to Rethink Togetherness, which is currently on display at the Nieuwe Instituut, curator Amanda Pinatih and social designer Gabriel Fontana invite you to take part in this unique event exploring sports and inclusion.

Multiform is an alternative teamsport where the team line-up is anything but fixed. Played on an alternative three-sided playing field and featuring transformable team kits, the game challenges conventional ideas of competition, belonging and group identity.

Discover what happens when 'the other' becomes your teammate, and vice versa. Experience how we position ourselves in relation to others, what it means to belong to a majority or minority group, and how sport can help challenge processes of exclusion.

Developed by Gabriel Fontana in Rotterdam, Multiform has since travelled the world. In recent years, it has been played in schools across Europe, at Nike's headquarters in Portland, during the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, and as part of the Dutch contribution to the Venice Architecture Biennale.

The programme is split into two separate sessions, one for adults and one for children and young people. Both sessions will take place in Rotterdam's Museumpark, next to the Nieuwe Instituut.

A Building in Motion: Jo Coenen's Early Sketches for the Nieuwe Instituut. ⮕ Opening soon: sketches, drawings, and photographs documenting the architect's late-1980s design for what is now the Nieuwe Instituut.

From August 25, we will open a new exhibition located in our Re-Centre dedicated to the early design sketches Jo Coenen made before building the Architecture Institute (now Nieuwe Instituut).

Back in 1988, Jo Coenen was commissioned to build the new home for the national architecture institute, having won a competition against five other architects.

Rather than creating a single massive block, Coenen's design spread the building's functions across a series of interconnected sections, each with its own distinct materiality and formal language: a box-shaped brick exhibition gallery, an elongated archive space along the Rochussenstraat, and a tall glass office building containing a library and a reading room.

The exhibition allows you to follow the entire design process through Coenen's original sketches, from the initial competition entry to the finished building.

Maker en rondleider bij het Nieuwe Instituut Wietske Flederus neemt kinderen mee om samen te bouwen aan een netwerk van gebouwen. In deze workshop ontdekken kinderen hoe architectuur niet alleen gebouwen met elkaar verbindt, maar ook mensen.

Tijdens de workshop kunnen kinderen een klein 3D-bericht maken van verschillende materialen om deze vervolgens te sturen naar iemand die belangrijk voor hen is. Met iedere deelnemer groeit het netwerk verder en ontstaan er nieuwe verbindingen.

Wie zou jij iets willen sturen? Een buur, een vriend, je oma, of iemand die wel een glimlach kan gebruiken?

Tijdens de Zomerbouwweken kunnen kinderen iedere woensdagmiddag meedoen aan workshops rondom architectuur, design en fantasiewerelden.⁠

In the 1930s, the Sonneveld family furnished their garden with tubular steel and rattan chairs, likely designed by German designer Erich Dieckmann.

Alongside Marcel Breuer, Dieckmann is considered one of the most important furniture designers at the Bauhaus in Weimar. Like Breuer, he experimented extensively with tubular steel. From the late 1920s he also designed cane furniture for gardens and balconies.

Dieckmann exploited the flexibility of cane to create a stable construction with the fewest possible components. The wickerwork seat and backrest are attached by winding the rattan as few times as possible around the frame, leaving the frame visible.

Digitising our Panel Collection.

Nieuwe Instituut is home to a rich and wide-ranging collection of over 700 archives and collections from architects and urban planners. Together, they offer an in-depth view into 175 years of architecture and urban planning history in the Netherlands.

A distinctive part of these collections consists of 2500 panels, many of which were made to visualise and communicate ideas to an audience. For instance during exhibitions, presentations and competitions. As such, they offer a direct glimpse into the creative process of architects and urban planners.

Over the past months, Nieuwe Instituut has been working hard to digitise these panels. Digitisation means the objects need to be handled physically less often, which contributes to their preservation, while also making them more accessible than ever, easier to consult, research, and use in publications and exhibitions.

What once remained hidden in storage now takes on a new digital life, visible to everyone.

Explore Sonneveld House: one of the best-preserved homes in the functionalist Nieuwe Bouwen style.

The villa, located on the edge of the Museum Park in Rotterdam, was designed in the early 1930s by the architecture office Brinkman en Van der Vlugt, known for the Van Nelle factory and the Feyenoord stadium.

Sonneveld House shows how a prominent Rotterdam family embraced Modernism, and how that choice shaped their daily living environment.

Together, the architecture and interior form a modern Gesamtkunstwerk, with exterior and interior design carefully tuned to enhance one another. The architects planned the furnishing and decorations down to the smallest detail.
