Dentro Di Nos Tempo is a workshop by Janilda Bartolomeu () as part of the Another Island project. It invites Cape Verdeans in Rotterdam to co-create a symbolic time capsule. Bartolomeu does not view time as linear or one-dimensional; it can be experienced culturally and collectively, for example through the memories of the Cape Verdean diaspora.
During the workshop, diverse issues and materials will come together in the time capsule. Please bring your own contributions, such as photos, videos, meaningful objects, and letters that you would like to pass on to future generations.
Saturday, 6 June. 15:30-17:30
Language: Dutch

Not all silence is peaceful.

As climates shift and cities grow louder, entire soundscapes are disappearing — changing how we relate to nature, technology, and each other.

During Research Night: Near Silence — The Politics of Quiet, artists, researchers, and musicians explore how listening can become a way of understanding environmental change and social power, and you are invited to join us in this conversation!

As part of the ongoing exhibition Dutch, More or Less, the Nieuwe Instituut is inviting established and emerging designers to showcase the future of ‘more or less Dutch’ design. In the fifth and last instalment of the series, multimedia and performance artist Maja Simišić () addresses the absurdity and bureaucracy behind the concept of ‘Dutchness’ in A Beautiful Cockroach.

New Garden has been part of the outdoor space of the Nieuwe Instituut since 2015. It is used to raise current design issues. Ecological management and creating a high level of biodiversity are the starting points. In the winter of 2021, the garden was redesigned due to the restructuring of the Museum Park. Since then, work has been done on the ecological restoration of the garden. 🌳

Fun fact! Sonneveld House has no fewer than twelve telephones: two for external calls and ten for internal calls. Because the internal and external systems were completely separate, Mr and Mrs Sonneveld had two telephones in their bedroom: one for internal calls and one for external calls. In the 1930s renting a telephone line was expensive at almost a hundred guilders a year, excluding the price of calls. For the Sonnevelds, however, a telephone was an essential part of modern living. Mr Sonneveld had to be available day and night for his business contacts, including those in America. For this reason, Sonneveld House was connected to the phone system from the very start.

The exhibition Reclaiming Space // Reclaiming Narrative showcases student projects developed within the course Architecture and Colonialism at TU Delft, which critically examines architecture not merely as a backdrop to colonial violence, but as one of its most enduring instruments.

Reclaiming Space // Reclaiming Narrative is now on show in our Re-Centre. You can visit the Re-Center during the museum’s opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00, and during the evening opening on Thursdays until 21:00.
