Ed van der Elsken photographed street life up close. His images are direct, personal and often raw.

His personal archive, jointly acquired by the Nederlands Fotomuseum and the Rijksmuseum , forms the basis for ‘Ed van der Elsken. Up Close’ at the Rijksmuseum. In the exhibition, the story behind his images unfolds through photographs, contact sheets, notes, dummies and darkroom experiments. Works from the Nederlands Fotomuseum collection are also exhibited.

The exhibition shows how Van der Elsken selected, arranged and shaped his photographs into visual stories. ‘Ed van der Elsken. Up Close’ open until 13 September 2026 at the Rijksmuseum.

🇳🇱 Ed van der Elsken fotografeerde het leven op straat van dichtbij. Zijn beelden zijn direct, persoonlijk en vaak rauw.

Zijn persoonlijke archief, verworven door het Nederlands Fotomuseum en het , vormt de basis voor ‘Ed van der Elsken. Up Close’ in het Rijksmuseum. In de tentoonstelling wordt het verhaal achter zijn beelden zichtbaar door foto’s, contactvellen, notities, proefversies en experimenten uit de donkere kamer. Ook zijn werken uit de collectie van het Nederlands Fotomuseum te zien.

De tentoonstelling laat zien hoe Van der Elsken zijn foto’s koos, ordende en vormgaf tot visuele verhalen. Tot en met 13 september in het Rijksmuseum.

Yanniek Schoonhoven is sitting on the stairs as if she often sits there. Small details reveal the spirit of the place: an old house, somewhat worn but not neglected, clean and tidy. There is a palpable sense of history and tradition. The staircase leading upstairs adds a sense of movement and mystery to the portrait, leaving us wondering where it leads. The perspective suggests that photographer Ruud Sies crouched down low – perhaps even lay on the floor – to include the staircase in the composition.

The portrait introduces us to Yanniek Schoonhoven. Six years ago, she moved to Spain to research regenerative agriculture in a region severely affected by desertification. There, she met Alfonso and never left. Together, they now run La Junquera: a place where farming, education, research and ecosystem restoration come together.

Ruud Sies photographed Yanniek as part of ‘Good Food’, an exhibition that explores a global community of farmers, growers, thinkers and scientists who are shaping more sustainable ways of producing food. Together with Hanneke van Hintum, he travelled to 22 countries across five continents to document their stories through photography and film.

In ‘Good Food’ volgen fotograaf Ruud Sies en creative producer Hanneke van Hintum een wereldwijde gemeenschap van pioniers die werken aan de toekomst van ons voedselsysteem. De tentoonstelling is onderdeel van het bredere project Resilience Food Stories, dat ook een publicatie, een platform en een publieksprogramma omvat.

Het ruimtelijk ontwerp van de tentoonstelling werd ontwikkeld door Jamie van Lede en Mira Matić van AMORV. Hun scenografie brengt fotografie, film en publicaties samen in een presentatie waarin de verhalen van voedselveranderaars van over de hele wereld een podium krijgen.

‘Good Food’ is an exhibition exploring a global community of farmers, growers, thinkers and scientists shaping more sustainable ways of producing food. Ruud Sies and Hanneke van Hintum travelled to 22 countries on five continents to document their stories through photography and film. In this series, we introduce the photos to you through the eye of the photographer.

In this portrait, Ruud introduces us to Corrado Assenza, the celebrated Sicilian chef behind Caffè Sicilia, often described as the “sancta sanctorum” of Sicily’s historic pastry tradition.

For the portrait Ruud made of Corrado, the photographer chose a relatively close-up composition. By lowering his camera slightly, we look up at him a little, which gives him a dignified presence. Corrado appears friendly and radiates calmness: someone who clearly knows what he is doing. Ruud also lowered his position to include the mirror as a distinctive element in the composition, a mirror that adds a sense of depth and space to the photograph. The small vase is a charming detail, providing almost the only touch of color in the entire image.

‘Good Food’ showcases Ruud’s distinctive documentary approach. Rather than creating images that invoke feelings of social, cultural or emotional distance, he brings the people closer to us. His photographs create a sense of connection, inviting us to engage with their stories in a subtle and intimate way.

Op donderdag 25 juni opent ‘Quickscan 3. Fotografie nu’ in het Nederlands Fotomuseum. Vanaf 20.00 uur is iedereen welkom bij de feestelijke opening van de tentoonstelling.

‘Quickscan 3’ geeft een actueel overzicht van de staat van Nederlandse fotografie en toont werk van twintig in Nederland werkzame fotografen en beeldend kunstenaars. Van fotoboeken en video tot performance, digitale media en AI: de tentoonstelling laat zien hoe makers de mogelijkheden van fotografie verkennen, combineren en bevragen.

Ontdek tijdens de openingsavond de tentoonstelling en geniet van live muziek van Roda da Holanda en een DJ-set van DJ AK Soundsystem.

Gisteravond openden we ‘Good Food’ in het Nederlands Fotomuseum. De tentoonstelling toont het werk van fotograaf Ruud Sies en creative producer Hanneke van Hintum. Sinds 2017 reizen zij door 22 landen over de hele wereld die werken aan toekomstbestendige manieren van voedselproductie. ‘Good Food’ is gecureerd door Frits Gierstberg, voormalig Senior Curator van het Nederlands Fotomuseum, en onderdeel van het project ’Resilience Food Stories’.

Zippora Elders: “’Good Food’ richt zich op wat er juist en al gedaan wordt. De tentoonstelling laat zien dat andere manieren van voedselproductie wel degelijk mogelijk zijn.”

Last night, we opened ‘Good Food’ at the Nederlands Fotomuseum. The exhibition presents the work of photographer Ruud Sies and creative producer Hanneke van Hintum. Since 2017, they have travelled through 22 countries around the world, documenting initiatives that are working towards future-proof ways of producing food. ‘Good Food’ is curated by Frits Gierstberg, former Senior Curator of the Nederlands Fotomuseum, and is part of the wider project ‘Resilience Food Stories’.

Zippora Elders: “‘Good Food’ focuses on what is already being done. The exhibition shows that alternative ways of food production are not only possible, but already exist.”
