Through the crafting Art workshops I give across the Netherlands, I’ve experienced how important representation can be within creative spaces.
When working with newcomers, immigrants, and participants from diverse cultural backgrounds, I often notice a strong sense of openness and trust developing naturally within the group. I have been told Participants seem more comfortable expressing themselves and engaging freely in the creative process.
Feedback from observers and organizations has highlighted how specially welcoming and connected the atmosphere feels during these sessions.
I believe part of this comes from relatability and representation. Seeing someone who reflects aspects of your own background can create a sense of safety, possibility, and belonging — all essential ingredients for creativity.
As an African black artist and workshop facilitator, I’m grateful to contribute to spaces where people feel seen, comfortable, and free to create.
