PINK PILLOW features ten photographic works, all created in Mariëlle Gebben’s studio. There, she constructs layered arrangements, illuminating them with artificial lighting or flash. Most of the work takes place before she presses the shutter: building, shifting and lighting the installation. Once everything is right, Gebben immerses herself in it with her camera, becoming part of it, as it were. In Pink Pillow, she uses this approach to capture the sensation of the mental journey that can begin when you rest your head on the pink pillow, travelling straight through it into The Flux. In photographic works such as Haze and Pink Flux, she attempts to make something of that other reality visible. Sweet dreams also refers directly to the pillow as the starting point of such a journey.

In PINK PILLOW, Mariëlle Gebben presents entirely new work. Photographic images, sculptures and works in glass, textile and paper come together to give form to the pink cushion. The exhibition is an ode to the resistance of softness, in a colour whose meaning is constantly changing.

Sweet Dreams

It began with a pink cushion: its softness, the shapes it seemed to want to take, the routes it appeared to offer into worlds beyond. Mariëlle Gebben felt that cushion deserved to be described. She couldn’t do it. Life moved on, and she became a photographer. Years later, that failed attempt to capture the pink cushion in words became the source of her solo exhibition.
