Centuries-old gilding rarely looks perfect, and that is often part of its beauty.

On an antique Buddha, original gilding may survive in protected areas while years of handling, worship and exposure reveal the bronze, lacquer or wood beneath. These variations can become part of the statue’s history.

A completely uniform golden surface on a centuries-old piece deserves closer examination. For collectors, natural wear can tell a far more interesting story than perfection.

Gold on a Buddha is more than decoration. In Buddhist art, gilding emphasizes the sacred nature of the image and transforms the statue into an object of devotion.
Across Asia, craftsmen developed different techniques using gold leaf, lacquer and, in some traditions, fire gilding.
On antique statues, only traces may remain. Those traces are part of the history of the piece.

Peter is currently travelling by motorcycle through the Pamirs in Central Asia. Today there is little here that immediately reminds you of Buddhism, but this landscape has a much older story.
The ancient Silk Roads connected India and Afghanistan with Central Asia and China. Along these routes travelled not only merchants, but also Buddhist monks, teachings and artistic ideas.
For Peter, who has spent much of his life surrounded by Buddhist art, it is fascinating to travel through this ancient crossroads.

Peter on Tour: The Reclining Buddha, Dushanbe

Our founder Peter visited the National Museum of Antiquities in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, home to the famous Reclining Buddha of Ajina Tepa. About 13 metres long and made of clay, it is the largest surviving Buddha statue in Central Asia. Crafted more than 1,200 years ago for a Buddhist monastery in southern Tajikistan, it shows the Buddha entering parinirvana, his final release, calm and at peace.

Standing next to it is a humbling reminder of how far the Buddha's teachings travelled along the Silk Road.

Four days to create. A few moments to let go.

On the occasion of International Peace Day, four Tibetan monks transformed our gallery in Deventer into a place of patience, concentration, and reflection.

Grain by grain, they created a traditional sand mandala dedicated to Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig), the embodiment of compassion. After four days of meticulous work, the completed mandala was ceremonially dissolved, reminding us of one of Buddhism’s essential teachings: everything is impermanent.

The sand was then carried to the IJssel and returned to the water, allowing the intention of compassion and peace to continue beyond the mandala itself.
A beautiful reminder that peace begins with how we meet ourselves, one another, and the world around us.

This 18th-century standing Ayutthaya Buddha, cast in bronze and gilded with 24-karat gold, raises his right hand in Abhaya mudra, the gesture of fearlessness and protection. A quiet reminder that peace begins with compassion.

A mandala for peace. 🕊️
