Some people think light can be painted on its own, but it’s the shadows that really help us see and understand the light. ☀️

The colour, shape and direction of a shadow all tell us something about the light source and the object casting it. The colour of the shadow is also influenced by the colour of the object, while the shape follows its form.

That’s why paying attention to shadows can make such a difference in your artwork. They give your light more depth and make everything feel more realistic.

In a way, the shadow is what gives us the light. 🎨

See the light in a different way. ✨

These FINETEC Premium Mica Watercolours catch the light beautifully, creating a subtle shimmer that changes with every angle. A great way to add some extra detail and shine to your artwork.

Day 6: Texture 🖊️

For this illustration, was inspired by the different textures an artist learns to draw along their creative journey. From stones and leaves to waves, portraits and lace, each new texture is a chance to practise, explore and develop your skills.

For the illustration, Anna used PANTONE markers and Sakura Pigma Micron fineliners.

What texture would you like to try drawing? 👀

What if your next creation started with just one kit? 🍉

With the Amsterdam All-in-One Starter Set, you’ve got everything you need to get started with acrylic painting: paints, brushes, a palette, a palette knife, modelling paste and acrylic markers.

For this project, choose to paint watermelons, playing with colour gradients, textures and depth. 🍉✨

Her top tip: go for a vibrant colour for your background and have fun experimenting with different textures to add depth to your painting.

So… ready to get started on the canvas? 🎨

What makes light feel bright in a painting? And how can shadows help guide the viewer’s eye? Artist Nard Kwast explores how light, dark and colour work together to create a strong composition.

His approach is simple: think less, look more. By focusing on the bigger areas of light and shadow before getting lost in the details, you can create more depth, contrast and atmosphere in your work.

In his latest blog, Nard shares his approach, practical tips and some of the lessons he has learnt from studying the Old Masters.

Light & Shadow. 🌗

This month, we’re exploring the relationship between light and darkness, and how contrast can change the way we see colour, shape and depth.

Because sometimes, it’s the shadows that make the light stand out. 🎨

Let’s explore Light & Shadow together this October.
