The one day symposium will feature some of the original artists and contributors of 𝘓𝘢𝘱𝘥𝘰𝘨𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘰𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘦, as well as new contributing artists and discussants around issues of class: Özgür Atlagan, Sepp Eckenhaussen, Annika Eriksson, Chris Evans, San Keller, Hassan Khan, Alina Lupu, Suhail Malik, Natascha Sadr Haghighian, Peter Spillmann, Eszter Szakács, Tirdad Zolghadr and others.

Over a period of nearly five years, 𝘓𝘢𝘱𝘥𝘰𝘨𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘰𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘦 interrogated how class structures shape the production, presentation and reception of contemporary art. Initiated in 2006, the project asked complex, unresolved questions, such as: How does class impact who becomes an artist or curator? Can contemporary art itself be seen as a privilege of the middle classes? Twenty years on, we return to these questions and ask why class continues to be so easily overlooked in the production and presentation of art—even at a time when matters of political equality are far more prevalent than before.

This second edition of de Appel Periodical extends some of the thematic threads that were present in the exhibition 𝘉𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘉𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘴, taking ‘shared space’ as its point of departure. Rather than referring to one particular kind of space, making room describes an action: opening, sharing, shaping and sustaining the conditions in which people can spend time, live and act together. It can begin in a living room, kitchen or cooperative building, as well as in a café or another kind of third place. It can also begin in an act of trust, a decision to share responsibility or a collective refusal to leave.

Moving across domestic, communal and public spaces, the six contributions explore how ‘room’ is created, used, maintained, questioned and transformed. Space emerges not as something simply available, but as something continually shaped and reshaped. Gabriella Okoobo writes about the house as a space of gathering for othered and marginalised people; Eli Witteman visits architect Andrea Verdecchia at de Nieuwe Meent for a conversation around housing coops; Arthur Saint-Remy & Clarisse Verbeek interact with Pascal Gielen's book, 𝘛𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘵: 𝘉𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘴; Ilia Pellapaisiotou and Jan-Pieter ‘t Hart interview the ‘collective of collectives’ damdam about their two-year trajectory together; WORKNOT! share videos and writing from their archival research into the housing crisis and collective rent strikes; and Natascha van den Boom asked her friends and colleagues about their needs and desires inhabiting third places.

𝘚𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘵 𝘋𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘵 is a one-day event in which four artists exchange a wayward and unique artistic service in an exchange with market visitors – for money, something tangible or intangible, symbolic or material. Out of many wonderful applications, four services were selected and will be delivered on the street market on Saturday 5 September, by artists Sixin Chen, Denitsa Ilcheva, Borys Kashapov and Berend Kemmeren. The project aims to go beyond the logic of the service industry, but instead invites artists to reinvent and appropriate the idea of "service" according to their needs and values.

This project is a joint activity of Lesia Kulchynska’s Service, de Appel Kiosk, and Sepp Eckenhaussen’s Shared Visions. Each of the three is a long-term project aiming to manipulate the economic rules of artistic labour. In 𝘚𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘵 𝘋𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘵, they collaborate for the first time.

In fact, when it comes to these questions, the art field itself may have more to contribute than meets the eye. We all know the art world is not exactly a meritocracy. But it may have proposals to share nonetheless. After all, it wouldn’t be the first time that contributions by art workers were overlooked or undervalued, by historians and theorists alike. By means of a project archive and a public programme, 𝘓𝘢𝘱𝘥𝘰𝘨𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘰𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘦 is a chance to build on such ideas, scenarios and analyses—and to imagine new perspectives for art and beyond.

Originally curated by Nav Haq and Tirdad Zolghadr, featuring artists Annika Eriksson, Chris Evans, Natascha Sadr Haghigian, San Keller, Hassan Khan and Marion von Osten, with new contributions by Özgür Atlagan and Alina Lupu.

In June and July this year, de Appel Kiosk took over Dappermarkt and Albert Cuypmarkt with three projects by art collective _ao_ao_ing ensemble, publishing collective Hi, Jack! Publishing and artist Alina Lupu. The latter will return once more to Dappermarkt, due to postponement because of last June's heatwave.

𝙑𝙖𝙡𝙪𝙚 𝘼𝙙𝙙𝙚𝙙 𝙏𝙚𝙭𝙩 by Alina Lupu is a text-based screenprinting workshop. Borrowing the fiscal term 'value added,' the project examines how commodities gain surplus value, and how language itself can function as added value. For the de Appel Kiosk, rather than bringing fixed slogans, she generates phrases through conversations with stallholders and visitors, learning from the history and dynamics of the marketplace. Clothing and textiles sold by vendors become the printing surface. The resulting texts will draw from the market’s own vocabulary: rent, pricing, scarcity, bargaining, care, inflation, work, and mutual dependence.

Taking place in the exhibition space, this workshop approaches the objects in the exhibition 𝘽𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖 𝙃𝙤𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙒𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝘽𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙨 as situated expressions of different temporal realities. Participants explore how different localities operate within distinct rhythms of time, shaped by urgency, stability, labour conditions, political contexts, and local calendars.

Participants are invited to trace how different understandings of time, continuity, urgency, and collective life become embedded within the objects and instructions, revealing multiple temporalities and cosmologies of organising across different localities. Through collective mapping and reflection, we examine how these uneven temporal infrastructures shape collaboration, and relations within translocal solidarity networks.

_ao_ao_ing ensemble, a performance collective based between Shanghai and Amsterdam, transplants a real Shanghai market stall onto Albert Cuypmarkt. They will run Linzi's Party Supplies: feather fans, paper lanterns, glittery tinsel, plastic dice, party props in fluorescent pink and electric blue; disposable and cheap goods of festivity and celebration.

The items come from the shop of Wu Fenglin (nicknamed Linzi), a party-supply vendor at Shanghai’s Chenghuangmiao Market. At Kiosk, the original wholesale price will be visible on the price tag alongside the European market price, tracing the gap and the journey in between.

For Hi, Jack! Publishing’s project at Dappermarkt, they focus on gleaning; collecting what is left behind or overlooked, as both a method and a lens on contemporary economies, where re-use, precarity, and informal circulation increasingly shape everyday life. During the market, they will produce a zine on site using discarded materials such as packaging, food remnants, and found images, alongside drawings and contributions from visitors, turning the publication into a collective portrait of the market.

We see urban markets as vibrant places where diverse cultures gather, becoming hubs for social interaction, community building, and cultural exchange. The street market is often based on small family or cooperative stalls and the forming of social solidarity between the stall owners. Part of the de Appel Kiosk’s endeavour is to reflect on practices of exchange and barter in market economies. de Appel wishes to engage in places other than art institutions to meet people through and with artistic practices without the overt distinction between art and society.

Artistic practice is often a risky economic endeavor. In fact, many contemporary artists have to combine their exciting but underpaid artistic practice with other jobs in education, retail, web design, or any other field where their artistic skills can be converted into marketable services. While artistic practice is a space for freedom and experimentation with no guarantees of financial reward, the job market requires obedience to clients’ demands, in exchange for money. We want to challenge this dilemma, and relaunch the service industry on artistic terms.

We invite artists to join a one-day event, where they can present their artistic practice in the form of wayward, unique, and unreplicable service in exchange for money, something tangible or intangible, symbolic or material, straight on the market.

The artists are welcome to fashion a type of service that is not classified in a standard market service list, but that conveys valuable experience to others. This could be a nail design in a unique painterly manner, a lesson on whistling one's favorite songs, a saying good-buy workshop, or anything else, suiting their specific and extraordinary experience, talents, and attitudes. Your potential customers most likely don't know yet that they need this service, but we believe that they will appreciate it once they encounter your unexpected and precious offer. There are no limits except for the rule: the services cannot be modified upon the demand of the customer, only enjoyed as they are. We are, after all, still dealing with art.

With this project, our aim is to go beyond the logic of the service industry and invite artists to reinvent and appropriate the idea of "service" according to their needs and values. The artists participating in the project will become part of the emerging community of unclassified service providers.

𝘽𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖 𝙃𝙤𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙒𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝘽𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙨 consists of a public programme and exhibition hosted by damdam – a collective of collectives brought together by de Appel Curatorial Programme, Sandberg Instituut temporary master Lumbung Practice, and Gudskul, Jakarta – which seeks to cultivate methods of collective organisation in times of crisis. The festival is formulated around three central questions: How to organise? How to distribute labour and resources? How to share what we produce?

Next week marks the opening weekend, with a festive opening on Friday 3 July, and a collaborative programme with Kunstverein Aughrim on Sunday 5 July.

During the 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲, one of the exhibited works, a clay oven, will be activated as the centre of an ongoing ritual gathering. Visitors are invited to gather around the fire, share stories, prepare bread together, and take part in a collective moment of making and eating.

Developed through exchange between the participants the Lumbung Practice programme in Amsterdam and Kunstverein Aughrim Creative Producer Programme in Ireland, 𝙈𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 will unfold through two artistic presentations by artists Avril Corroon and Katie Watchorn, on questions of living conditions, infrastructure and the politics of place. This will be followed by a panel conversation with the Kunstverein Aughrim Creative Producers on sustaining curatorial and artistic practices through collective organisation and infrastructures of care and hospitality.
