[Artwork highlight] In our exhibition ‘Encounter’ at the Pop-up in Nijmegen, we are presenting, among others, works by Henk Wildschut, whose practice is known for its contemplative and observant view of people and their environments.

The works on view, taken from his series on refugee camps, reveal how even in the most temporary and vulnerable conditions, the need for a sense of home persists. While visiting camps across the world, Wildschut became fascinated by the small gardens created around tents - universal symbols of hope, resilience, and humanity.
Through his carefully balanced photography, he invites viewers to pause, reflect, and consider what it means to create a place of belonging in uncertain times.

[Artist updates] 2026 is set to be a busy and promising year for Lawrence James Bailey!
At the end of April, he was featured in a group exhibition with the Tekenkabinet at KunstRAI Amsterdam. Since 24 April, a two-person exhibition with Nanna Lahn has also been running at (until 24 June).

And there’s more: since Friday 8 May, his work has also been on display in the group exhibition Skin at our gallery in Amsterdam.

Bailey will remain very busy over the coming months:
• 10 May – 28 June: “Op de Keper Beschouwd”, group exhibition, Kunsthal 45, Den Helder
• 22 – 24 May: solo presentation with Galerie Bart during Art Busan, South Korea

Curated by Jochem Rotteveel, Skin explores the boundary between material and surface, both literally and metaphorically: as something that protects, connects, exposes, and shapes how we experience art. [Art Busan] Galerie Bart returns to Art Busan with a solo presentation by Lawrence James Bailey.

Based in Amsterdam, Bailey (1976, UK) creates textile portraits by stitching directly onto layered fabrics, drawing with thread. His work explores the shifting boundary between humans and nature, where organic forms gradually take over the human face, merging both into one.

We are proud to present his work and invite visitors to engage with his refined compositions, in which theme, colour and texture converge to create a compelling visual experience.

The 15th edition of Art Busan takes place from 22–24 May 2026 at BEXCO in Busan.

[Introduction artists] In only two days, Skin, curated by Jochem Rotteveel, opens at Galerie Bart in Amsterdam. In the lead-up to the opening, we will be introducing the participating artists. Last but not least, we are pleased to introduce Barbara Helmer, Paco Dalmau, and Tim Mastik.

Barbara Helmer (1966) lives in Rotterdam and her work is characterised by a visible build-up of layers, colour, and subtle transitions between light and dark. She originally developed this approach in her coloured pencil drawings on paper, and more recently has extended it into her screenprints.

Paco Dalmau Arrufat (1978) lives and works in Rotterdam. His artistic practice is wide-ranging, spanning painting through to socially engaged public installations. In the paintings shown in the exhibition, he explores themes deeply rooted in the language of painting itself, such as colour and framing.

Tim Mastik (1986), also based in Rotterdam, is an artist whose practice navigates the space between painting and sculpture. Working with form, repetition, symmetry, and material, he develops compositions that balance construction with intuition. Through processes such as layering, and reapplying paint, he explores how physical intervention transforms colour, surface, and perception over time.

[Exhibition] Encounter has now been open for more than a week! The opening was warm, lively, and received with so much enthusiasm: thank you to everyone who came by!

[Introducing the artists] Next Friday, 8 May, Skin, curated by Jochem Rotteveel, opens at Galerie Bart in Amsterdam. In the lead-up to the opening, we will introduce the participating artists. Today, we introduce Nomin Zezegmaa, Akihiro Boujoh, and Lawrence James Bailey!

Nomin Zezegmaa (1992) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, working across a range of media. Her practice draws on Mongolian cosmology to explore notions of deep time and the interconnectedness of matter, spirit, and history. She treats materials as living entities, acting as mediators between visible and invisible worlds.

Akihiro Boujoh (1990) is a Japanese artist, born in Nagasaki and based in Utrecht. Working with sculpture, installation, and photography, he explores the relationships between nature, environment, and humanity. His work is informed by Japanese garden philosophy and the shifting, impermanent nature of space and time.

Lastly, Lawrence James Bailey (1976), is a UK-born artist based in Amsterdam. He creates embroidered textile portraits in which bodies merge with nature. He treats fabric as a fragile skin - pierced, torn, and repaired -to reveal material as both vulnerable and responsive.

[Introducing the artists] On Friday, 8 May, Skin, curated by Jochem Rotteveel, opens at Galerie Bart in Amsterdam. In the lead-up to the opening, we will introduce the participating artists, starting with Nikki Krul, Iris Bouwmeester, Willem Boel and Sander Reijgers.

Playful, colourful and rich in texture: meet Nikki Krul. With a background at the Design Academy Eindhoven and a minor in textiles, her practice focuses on textile, color and print. Working with textile waste, she explores material through research and playful experimentation.

Iris Bouwmeester (1969), educated at the Sint Joost Academy for Art and Design and the Sandberg Institute, creates sculptures and installations that explore light, space and material through a balance of order and chaos. Embracing uncertainty as part of her process, her work remains open, intuitive and in constant transformation.

Willem Boel (1983) is based in Ghent, where he studied at the LUCA School of Arts, and combines installation and painting. His industrial iron and steel structures reflect real and imagined narratives, while his 2D and 3D paintings build complexity through repetitive, minimal gestures.

Sander Reijgers (1977) is based in Zeist and studied at the HKU University of the Arts Utrecht. His practice centres through repetition and material. Layered with a roller, his seemingly monochrome paintings reveal subtle shifts in colour and texture shaped by time and accumulation.
