The Royal Press is a living polyglot letterpress museum.

Visitors can embark on a tour that will take them through our letter-block library that houses over 150,000 blocks in four different language-types: Roman alphabets, Chinese characters, Arabic and Tamil scripts. Printed memorabilia, from liquor labels to old bus tickets to 1950s Peranakan calendars, tell a timeless narrative of Melaka's history through its forgotten everyday treasures. It is definitely a journey not to be missed.

Our staff Amin is setting up a special piece today by using a linoboard featuring a classic stamp design, complete with the iconic Malayan tiger and the year 1963. A perfect tribute to the birth of Malaysia and the craft that keeps our stories alive.

The ink is drying and the presses are pausing, but only for a moment. As announced, The Royal Press will be temporarily closing its doors from 22nd of June to 5th of July.

Ever wonder why you see these majestic creatures on traditional murals?

At The Royal Press, our walls tell stories that go way beyond simple art. They are packed with symbols of luck, prosperity, and wisdom from Chinese culture. Our murals aren’t just decoration, they are visual prayers for a beautiful life :)

Let me share some of the stories behind these murals.

Take the Deer (禄 - Lù): More than just a graceful animal, it’s a homophone for "salary." Seeing a deer is a classic wish for career success and a high-ranking position! Plus, they are believed to live for a very long time, making them a beautiful emblem for longevity.

The Crane: Often seen as the mount of immortals and spirits, it’s the ultimate symbol of a long, healthy life. Legend even says they carry the souls of the departed to the heavens. Interestingly, it also symbolizes a harmonious marriage! 🕊️

Next time you visit TRP, look closer—you might just find these symbols hidden in plain sight.

Do you know that The Royal Press is one of the hidden wonders of Melaka. It's letter block library consists of more than 150,000 individual blocks.

Indeed! It is a big number because the letterblocks can be used in English, Chinese, Arabic and Tamil where each featuring its own unique alphabet and script.

Here is a look inside the heart of the library sections. Just imagine the skill it takes for someone to remember the exact home of every single letter block across all these unique sections!

This is the Linotype 78, one of the crown jewels of The Royal Press in Melaka—one of the world’s oldest surviving polyglot letterpress museums.

While most presses handled one or two languages, TRP was a master of many, housing over 150,000 letter blocks in Roman, Jawi, Chinese, and Tamil scripts.
