🌕✨ Happy Mid-Autumn Festival! 中秋節快樂! ✨🌕

The Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋節) falls on 25 September this year. Although many Peranakan Chinese families no longer observe the traditional practice of moon worship, the festival remains a meaningful occasion for family reunions and for making offerings of mooncakes to household deities and ancestors.

Pictured here are some old-school kueh bulan (mooncakes) that can still be found in Malacca — from right to left: Hokkien, Hakka, and the ever-popular Cantonese variety. 🥮

And if you’re visiting us at the Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum tomorrow, you might just get to enjoy a complimentary slice of mooncake with us! 😊

Although it has been a museum for the past 41 years, the Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum remains the ancestral home of the Chan family. Today, descendants of the family returned to honour their roots, performing ancestral rites in conjunction with the Hungry Ghost Festival.

Offerings were also made to the “good brothers”, or ho hia-di, at the back door of the Chan ancestral home—a gesture of kinship and compassion towards wandering spirits and homeless souls.

The ritual is a poignant reminder that, beyond its role as a museum, the house remains a living link between generations, where family, memory and tradition continue to endure.

The Chinese Seventh Month Prayers (七月祭祀) are a time-honoured Chinese tradition dedicated to honouring ancestors and remembering those who have passed on. Observed during the seventh month of the Chinese lunar calendar, this period holds deep significance for many Chinese and Peranakan families.

During this time, families make offerings of food, incense and other symbolic items, offering prayers to their ancestors and departed loved ones. These practices reflect enduring values of filial piety, gratitude and remembrance, while strengthening the connection between generations.

Beyond its rituals, the Chinese Seventh Month observance represents a meaningful link between past and present—preserving traditions handed down through generations and encouraging respect for family, community and cultural heritage.

On 24th August, members of the Chan family will return to their ancestral home—now the Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum—to perform the Chinese Seventh Month prayers before their ancestral altar. Visitors are warmly invited to witness this living tradition, faithfully practiced and preserved across generations.

An evening where stories, memory and heritage came beautifully together.

On 8 August 2026, within the evocative surroundings of the Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum, we gathered to celebrate the launch of Run, My Daughters, Run by Dr Lee Su Kim.

It was a fitting setting for a book shaped by the threads of family, identity and lived experience — a lovely occasion of words, friendship and shared memories.
