🧵 World Embroidery Day 2026 | Stitch for Peace 🤍🕊️
Today, Thursday, 30 July, we join communities around the world in celebrating 2026.
Earlier this week, we welcomed students and teachers from Tunku Putra-HELP School through our ASPIRE Community Outreach to Schools (COTs) programme, where they experienced the beauty of Keringkam—Sarawak's treasured gold embroidery.
It was especially heartening to see many of the international students quickly pick up the basic techniques. While some were understandably shy at first, others eagerly embraced the activity from the moment they sat down.
They were fascinated to discover that Keringkam is far more than decorative embroidery. It involves carefully counting fabric threads with remarkable precision, where mathematics, patience and artistry come together in every stitch. Before long, curiosity and enthusiasm had transformed into confident first stitches—much to the delight of our trainers, Leeza and Faruq.
Many of these students have made Sarawak their home for several years, making it especially meaningful to see them learning not only the techniques of Keringkam, but also the history and cultural significance behind one of Sarawak's treasured textile traditions. Many also reflected on the traditional crafts of their own countries, reminding us that heritage has the remarkable ability to connect people across cultures and borders.
Inspired by this year's World Embroidery Day theme, "Stitch for Peace," we believe peace is created one small action at a time—just like embroidery. A single stitch may seem small, but together, thousands create something extraordinary.
Through our ASPIRE Programme and Community Outreach to Schools (COTs), Keringkam has become a bridge between generations and cultures, preserving tradition while inspiring brighter futures.
As we celebrate World Embroidery Day, we honour every artisan, trainer, learner, volunteer and supporter who continues to keep these traditions alive. Together, we are stitching together understanding, resilience, opportunity and peace, one stitch at a time.
