Collective for Historical Dialogue & Memory The Collective for Historical Dialogue & Memory (CHDM) works with the past to create just futures for all peoples in Sri Lanka

The Collective for Historical Dialogue and Memory (CHDM) is pleased to announce its official launch. CHDM is an independent and specialist institution that devises and implements processes centred around interrogating, documenting and preserving forgotten and neglected aspects of Sri Lanka’s complex past. CHDM’s core pillars focus on archival work, history education, museums and historical dialogue. CHDM is committed to working in a collaborative and interdisciplinary manner. Our supporters and collaborators will be familiar with CHDM’s previous work through the Historical Dialogue and the Memory Culture Unit of the former GIZ-SRP programme, many activities of which will continue, including its popular memory walks, the travelling history museum and its interventions in history didactics. CHDM was founded by a group of practitioners from diverse fields to contribute to memory work and to strengthen the practices of archiving, museology and history education. Over the years, successive Sri Lankan governments have continued to downplay the numbers of the disappeared and the killed. How can we begin to document and preserve their identities? How can we collectively put together lists, keep counting and continue to ask the question: where are they?

On this International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, we remember those who are still missing and reaffirm our committment to supporting the struggle for truth, accountability and justice!

FRACTURED MEMORIES
– searching back the history while uncovering the body and movements

What does the body remember when history has been rewritten, silenced, or erased?

FRACTURED MEMORIES is a decolonial performance by viji / vijayshanthan, exploring the intersections of biomythography, historical unrest, colonial wounds, and living memory.

Through movement, shifting perspectives, and multi-voiced choruses, the performance brings into focus the unspoken narratives of Afro-Sri Lankan and coastal Indigenous lineages—tracing what has been pushed into nonexistence and what continues to live through the body.

The body becomes both archive and resistance: a living memorial, reweaving fragmented histories and giving breath to complex, enduring forms of existence.
