Based in the historical centre of Volterra (Tuscany), KALPA is located in Palazzo Bonomini, a fascinating building a few steps away from the famous Etruscan city gate Porta all’Arco. The Gallery’s vision revolves around the concepts of high art

istic refinement, the intuitive passion of craftsmanship and a holistic approach to interior design. The style balances elegance and simplicity, contemporary and past, West and East in an all-encompassing wabi-sabi sensibility. At KALPA, both the languages of art and design, tradition and innovation, are selected in order to establish a stimulating synergy, and then harmoniously presented to visitors as objects to become part of their daily life and space. Spanning painting, alabaster, bronze, ceramics and wood, Gallery artists’ inspiration begins with the observation of Nature, its physical and conceptual forms. Sophisticated and elegant atmosphere, sober and minimalistic furniture and warm neutral tones, KALPA’s main space is an in-progress project giving a platform for various arts in its time-hallowed rooms. Beginning with the restoration work of the ground floor in the spring of 2019, KALPA expands its exhibition space in 2022, unveiling Palazzo Bonomini’s beauty step by step, and following criteria of recovery, preservation and valorisation of its historical value and original atmosphere.

Final weeks to visit and explore Janine Thüngen-Reichenbach’s solo exhibition at KALPA, Indentations of Memory, presenting a selection of bronze sculptures part of the artist’s new series Baumwelt, dedicated to the world of trees.

Among them are two sculptures honouring two of the most ancient and common trees in the Mediterranean landscape, the oak and the olive, respectively entitled Quercus Super and Olea Europea. Ancient, symbolic of strength, and evocative of their role and presence in past civilisations, their spirit is infused into bronze. Each sculpture is cast from a single tree, acting as a physical and artistic transposition of the living organism itself, and as a witness to the tree’s unique energy, inner tension, and breath. Focusing on nature’s impermanence, the Baumwelt bronzes explore the intersection of botanical memory and spherical form. The comprehensive project, encompassing bronze, glass, and silicon, stems from the artist’s interest in the hidden connections among trees, recognising in their subterranean webs a metaphor for the invisible bonds that sustain life.

Located in the historic center of Volterra, the Atelier, a former artisan alabaster workshop turned into an intimate exhibition space, sits just steps away from KALPA’s main venue in the 15th-century Palazzo Bonomini. Profoundly connected to history, the Atelier is deeply bound to Volterra’s legacy as the capital of alabaster, a material crafted since Etruscan times and a symbol of the territory spanning from Volterra to the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Across the Atelier’s rooms, the language of the interior architecture establishes a stimulating synergy with the selected artworks, spanning paintings and sculptures made in a variety of materials, clay and raw earth, wood, oil, acrylic, and mixed media. Addressing ideas of intimacy, balance, and finesse, as well as an intuitive dialogue between finito and non-finito, the Gallery’s artists’ research begins with the observation of Nature to be translated into different forms, nuances, and media.

Rooted in a deep knowledge of textiles, Janine Thüngen-Reichenbach’s aesthetic and conceptual narrative explores the metamorphosis of matter and the spatio-temporal dimension. As suspended in space, her abstract wall sculptures and bas-reliefs created in washi are enriched by the inner spirit of the material itself, listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2014. This paper is made of the fibres of the inner bark of grasses such as mulberry, gampi, and mitsumata, and offers a warm and delicate sensation to the touch. In her creations, the artist enhances these authentic qualities and introduces distortions, unexpected movements and angles, that challenge the viewer’s perception of a firm sculpture.
Janine’s works present themselves as a physical atlas of thoughts in the act of transformation, accentuated by the light reflected on their soft and elusive surfaces that lend an impressionistic effect. They are mostly entitled by letters from the Greek alphabet, which are employed in contemporary mathematics to denote particle flows and angles. Their forms reflect the artist’s interest in groundbreaking space-time physics, specifically theories that depict space as constantly contorting, stretching, and crushing.

Within Janine Thüngen-Reichenbach’s solo exhibition, Indentations of Memory, on display at KALPA until August 2026, a selection of bronze sculptures is defined by a delicate, soft white patina, part of the artist’s new series Baumwelt dedicated to the world of trees.

Each sculpture is cast from a single, specific tree, Quercus ilex, Pinus pinaster, or Quercus suber, acting as a physical and artistic transposition of the living organism itself. Appearing as cosmic meteors, Thüngen-Reichenbach identifies each piece by its precise Latin nomenclature, meticulously recording the trunk’s dimensions, species, and origin. Every artwork becomes a microcosm in its own right: a witness of the tree’s unique energy, inner tension, and breath.

Through the dance of light across these light, textured surfaces, Thüngen-Reichenbach renders the solid ephemeral. By seeking out natural distortions and unexpected angles, she challenges our very perception of what a sculpture can - and should - be.

Until August 2026, on display at the KALPA main venue in Palazzo Bonomini, Volterra, Janine Thüngen-Reichenbach’s solo exhibition entitled “Indentations of Memory”. Through unique matrices, inverted casts of real surfaces of ancient walls and tree bark, the artist makes visible and palpable what normally remains hidden, transforming every mark, erosion, and wound into a testimony to biological, geological, and human stories.

The exhibited artworks, sculptures and bas-relief in bronze and washi paper, possess an organic movement set against an earthy, compact texture that reflects their intrinsic bond with the ground. The artist’s effort to “dematerialize” the sculpture introduces a deliberate discontinuity into the matter, evoking a sense of lightness and motion in each of her pieces.

Occhi (2025), by Roberta Busato, is carved from agate alabaster from the Etruscan city of Volterra, the home of KALPA. The artwork centres on an inward gaze and presents eyes closed in contemplation. Smoothly polished facial features alternate with areas intentionally left rough by the artist.

Rooted in ritual awareness, the sculpture acts as a mindful presence. Roberta Busato transforms an anthropomorphic figure into a spiritual entity, a silent mirror where seeing becomes a medium of inner knowledge. Expressing the inexpressible, the artwork arises from a profound meditative journey into the abysses of the self.

As an erudite researcher of colour and minerals, Pierre Bonnefille creates vast fields of paint using moongold, white, and black hues. Fully embracing non-figurative representation, he applies multiple thin layers that allow the colours beneath the surface to subtly glow and increase the depth of the composition.

Scratched, beaten, layered, Bonnefille’s pictorial matter in both the "Ice" and "Carbon" series seems to break like an ocean wave that rises and collapses, yet remains eternally present and solid. Taking inspiration from the unpredictable breath of nature, his paintings crystallise fleeting impressions through a succession of gestures, drawing on the grace and precision of Eastern calligraphy.

From the 2025 solo exhibition Intimate Mythologies by Roberta Busato, the magnetic bas-relief in agata alabaster “Leda” presents a female figure who lies on a swan feather. A pale vein runs across the body, emphasising its softness while introducing an element of emotional tension. Eyes closed in reflection, the figure merges with the swan and surrounding foliage, rendered through delicate engraved details.

Anthropomorphic and abstract elements intertwine in a suspended state where transformation becomes possible. Busato presents a fertile space of inner metamorphosis, a threshold where identities overlap and evolve, and where the myth is no longer narrated but lived.
