Artopia Gallery

Artopia Gallery Open from Monday to Friday, 3 - 7 pm
Saturday by appointment In 2008 the renovation of the space has transformed also the gallery attitude.

Founded in 2001 by Rita Urso under the name Artopia, located on the first floor of an ancient palace of the early twentieth century, the gallery inaugurate with an exhibition of Marzia Migliora curated by Emanuela De Cecco.

The gallery arouse to the attention of public and critics already from the beginning of its activity because of the interest set in the Balkan and Middle-East artistic scene

, proposing emerging artists for the first time. The site-specific projects,- among others, those of Adrian Paci, Phil Collins and Maja Bajevic - created around the unusual nature of the exhibition space that bordered and intertwined with the domestic space of the family, did privilege themes as home, its loss, sense of belonging and identity. At the original name is added RITA URSO. The new project is focused on Italian and international artists who approach architecture, cinema and design, and work with a wide range of media. All the artists from different generations and cultural backgrounds share the engagement with an existential and aesthetic vision of the reality. Each exhibition is accompanied by a publication containing a bilingual text and some pictures of the exhibited artworks.

[UPCOMING]

Artopia is thrilled to share the V edition of Nucré, opening on the 25th of July.

This year the project, named “Quasi maturi” and curated by Elena Forin, pays tribute to nature and its fruits. Growth, ripening, natural and cosmic cycles, attachment and decay are just some of the experiences the exhibition evokes on an emotional journey: how does one achieve the ideal state of growth? And how do time, collective values and economic dynamics affect the desirability of goods?

The exhibition embraces the territory of Ceglie Messapica, taking place across four venues: Castello Ducale, Trullo Rubina, Casa Archivio Giuseppe Urso and Ristorante Cibus.

More infos soon, in the meantime save the date.

[ON VIEW]

In this context, the duo’s practice unfolds as a layered experience of seeing and understanding, in which Egyptian blue becomes the symbol of a material that is at once concrete and historically situated. A material capable of expressing the tension between knowledge and process, between acquired understanding and still-open fields of inquiry.

[ON VIEW]

Ekserdjian’s practice takes shape as a hybrid language in which painting, drawing, and moving images coexist in a dynamic tension. Through a rapid gesture, the artist records and renders traces, evoking a dimension suspended between presence and dissolution.

Opening this Thursday at Artopia “How to Hold An Ocean with Four Hands” by Danish & Maitre.
The duo, composed of artists Jean-Baptiste Maitre (1978, France) and Dina Danish (1981, France), have, since 2016, worked together on specific projects alongside their independent practices. The exhibition presents an initial body of works centered on the artists’ research into Egyptian blue, an ancient and almost mythical pigment that emerged at the dawn of history and then gradually disappeared, leaving behind only traces and hypotheses. A true philological reconstruction began four years ago, following a lead without certainty, guided only by clues.

Danish & Maitre is the collaborative practice of Dina Danish and Jean-Baptiste Maitre, active since 2016. Their work bridges material research, experimental archaeology, and contemporary art. Recent projects include Reconstructing Egyptian Blue in Cairo (2024–2026) and embroidery and velvet embossing works spanning 2017–2022. Their practice has been shown at MAMbo in Bologna, the American Academy in Rome, Gallery Stigter van Doesburg and Martin van Zomeren in Amsterdam.

OPENING 14 MAY, 6-9pm
