Memory, respect, and a timeless message of peace. Outside the Gari River War Exposition, two monuments welcome the visitors, offering an immediate invitation to reflect.
The first work, a commemorative stele, is dedicated to the 100th Infantry Battalion of the U.S. 34th Infantry Division, serving as a lasting tribute to their contribution during the battles along the Gustav Line.
The second, entitled "The Prayer," stands to condemn the atrocities of all conflicts.
Two monuments that share the common objective of preserving history to convey a clear and universal message to future generations.

Memoria, rispetto e un messaggio di pace che travalica il tempo. All'esterno del Gari River War Exposition, due monumenti accolgono i visitatori proponendo una riflessione immediata.

La prima opera, una stele commemorativa, è dedicata al 100° Battaglione di Fanteria della 34ª Divisione statunitense, a perenne ricordo del contributo offerto durante i combattimenti lungo la Linea Gustav.
La seconda, intitolata "La Preghiera", per condannare le atrocità di tutti i conflitti.

Due monumenti che condividono come obiettivo quello di custodire la storia per insegnare alle nuove generazioni un messaggio chiaro e universale.

A couple walks through the ruins of Cassino after the end of the war.
Only rubble and ruins remain of the city, awaiting the beginning of reconstruction. In the immediate post-war period, the situation in and around Cassino was extremely difficult: finding food was complicated, and traveling was hazardous due to the countless unexploded devices scattered across the area. It took a long time for life to return to its normal self.

Una coppia cammina tra le rovine di Cassino dopo la fine della guerra. Della città rimangono solo macerie e rovine, in attesa dell’inizio della ricostruzione. Nell’immediato dopoguerra, a Cassino e nei dintorni la situazione era estremamente difficile: era complicato trovare da mangiare ed era pericoloso spostarsi a causa degli innumerevoli ordigni disseminati sul territorio. Ci volle molto tempo prima che la vita tornasse alla normalità.

The Gari River, whose waters today flow calm and clear, is also known as the River of the Four Battles due to the clashes that took place along the Gustav Line in 1944.
It is tragically famous for the so-called Battle of the Rapido, which occurred between January 20 and 22, 1944, after the Allies mistook it for the Rapido River, which flows through another sector of Cassino.
During the battle, the U.S. 36th ‘Texas’ Infantry Division lost several hundred men, killed, missing, and wounded, and the river’s waters ran red with the blood of the soldiers, earning it the moniker “The Bloody River”.

Il Fiume Gari, le cui acque oggi scorrono tranquille e limpide, è denominato anche Fiume delle Quattro Battaglie per via degli scontri che ebbero luogo lungo la Linea Gustav nel 1944.
È tristemente noto per la cosiddetta Battaglia del Rapido, avvenuta tra il 20 e il 22 gennaio 1944, dopo che gli Alleati lo confusero con il Fiume Rapido, che scorre in un altro settore di Cassino.
Durante la battaglia la 36ª Divisione di fanteria “Texas” degli Stati Uniti p***e diverse centinaia di uomini tra caduti, dispersi e feriti e l’acqua del fiume si tinse di rosso per il sangue dei soldati, arrivando a chiamarlo “The Bloody River”.

May 1944. The battle at the Gustav Line at Cassino has reached a stalemate. Allied forces are pinned down by heavy enemy fire and the treacherous Gari River, where thousands have already died.

To break through, 24-year-old Canadian Captain Anthony Kingsmill conceives a brilliant yet desperate plan: he removes the turret from a Sherman tank and mounts a massive 25-meter Bailey bridge on top.

Guided by Kingsmill on foot amid exploding mortar shells, the tank drives straight into the riverbed, turning its own chassis into a steel pillar that secures the bridge.
Allied armor crossed the river, smashed through the German lines, and opened the road to Rome. Today, this monument honors that heroic spark of genius.
