The Battle of the Rapido was fought in January 1944 in the Cassino area during the Second World War.
Troops of the U.S. 36th Infantry Texas Division, attempted to cross the river in order to break through the German Gustav defensive line, but they suffered heavy casualties due to intense enemy fire and the extremely difficult ground conditions.
The battle is remembered as one of the bloodiest episodes of the Battle of Cassino and of the entire Second World War.

La Battaglia del Rapido fu combattuta nel gennaio 1944 nell’area di Cassino, durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale.
Le truppe statunitensi della 36 Divisione Texas tentarono di attraversare il fiume per sfondare la linea difensiva tedesca Gustav ma subirono pesanti perdite a causa del fuoco nemico e delle difficili condizioni del terreno.
La battaglia è ricordata come uno degli episodi più sanguinosi della Battaglia di Cassino e dell’intera Seconda Guerra Mondiale

A 1937 guide to Rome written in french, the owner also noted inside the date on which he visited the Italian capital.
During the Second World War, including the Battle of Cassino, soldiers would often try to familiarize themselves with the places while learning the language of the regions in which they were fighting.

Durante la seconda guerra mondiale, anche durante la battaglia di Cassino, i soldati erano soliti cercare di conoscere i luoghi e imparare la lingua dei posti in cui si trovavano a combattere.

The Gari River (Rapido), located in the immediate vicinity of the exhibition, was a central element during the Battle of Cassino between January and May 1944 along the Gustav Line. In the First Battle of Cassino, from the 20th to the 22nd of January 1944, this river was the site of the failed Allied crossing attempt, one of the most dramatic and complex episodes of the Italian Campaign.

Il Fiume Gari (Rapido) nelle immediate vicinanze dell’esposizione, elemento centrale dei combattimenti durante la Battaglia di Cassino tra gennaio e maggio 1944 lungo la Linea Gustav.
Durante la Prima Battaglia di Cassino, tra il 20 e il 22 gennaio 1944, questo fiume fu teatro del fallito tentativo alleato di attraversamento, uno degli episodi più drammatici e complessi della Campagna d’Italia.
